NewsAtDen reporter Will Scott reports that there is a slight possibility of the 21-year-old making a sensational return to South London before the transfer window closes.

The Lions are actively exploring options in the final hours of the window following the agreed sale of star winger Femi Azeez to Brighton in a package worth north of £15 million.

Esse initially made his name in Millwall's academy before earning a high-profile £14.2 million transfer across South London to Crystal Palace in January 2025.

During his time at Selhurst Park, the England Under-21 international has featured as part of Oliver Glasner's squad during their FA Cup, Community Shield, and UEFA Conference League campaigns.

Millwall are not the only side to monitor the attacker's situation. Wrexham were actively tracking Esse in recent days as part of their aggressive summer recruitment, though the Welsh club have since shifted focus toward Sheffield United's Callum O'Hare.

Wolves, Preston North End, and Belgian side Club Brugge have also registered interest during the window, but the lure of regular playing time and a familiar environment puts Millwall in pole position to wrap up a deal before the window shuts.

Esse scored seven goals in 66 games for Millwall before earning a £14.2m transfer to Selhurst Park in January 2025, followed by a loan spell helping Coventry City secure Championship promotion.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Coventry City, playing a key role with 17 Championship appearances as the Sky Blues secured the second-tier title and promotion to the Premier League.

With total career stats standing at 12 goals and 6 assists across 107 senior appearances, Esse's familiarity with the South London side could make him an ideal late addition to fill the void left down the flank.
