With the FA Cup being back in full swing this weekend there was only 5 Championship matches taking place however, that didn’t stop there being drama.
In those 5 matches there was 14 goals scored, and Football Park is here to give you all the updates and news from across the league.
This was a match that was vital in Derby’s season as they look to be one of those teams that could finish the season in the promotion places. They currently sit in 6th place and in the last spot for the playoffs. They will be conscious as they are level on points with Preston in 7th and will be hoping that they can keep pushing forward. Ultimately this was a strong result for them pushing them into the promotion playoffs.
The first half didn’t offer much with the most noticeable parts being a yellow card for Derby striker Patrick Agyemang and a yellow card for Swansea midfielder Marko Stamenic. However, the first half wasn’t the ideal start for Derby really struggling to get into the game at all, they had only 27% possession and 2 shots. Swansea managed 6 shots, however, didn’t find the target for any of them. Overall, the first half was disappointing from both sides. However, the second half would be different.
Derby once again struggled to get the ball much, but when they had it, they made it count. 9 shots 5 on target and 2 goals. With one from striker Patrick Agyemang with his 10th goal of the season and second from Rhian Brewster. Overall, the performance was far from perfect from Derby, however, they got the result and that’s all that matters from them.
In a game that Portsmouth really needed all 3 points they failed to pick them up. While they are currently safe from relegation, that won’t be the case for long and this match would have been painful for them.
Both halves of the game it looked like it was just a matter of time before Portsmouth would score. The first half Portsmouth generated 1.54 xG with 3 big chances missed. However, they still had another 45 minutes to try and get something. They would have been hoping to repeat the first half dominating the game and chances created while limiting Sheffield United. They managed half of that. They generated another 0.96 xG in the second half but once again failed to convert.
It looked as if they would be sparing the points before a 90th minute dagger. As the clock ticks towards 90 minutes, Sheffield United manage to get a counterattack, and it worked. Even after all the pressure they were under, Andre Brooks managed to convert the counterattack and take all 3 points.
It will feel like a massive opportunity lost after this match to get away from the drop. But Portsmouth still has 6 possible points to pick up on the team around them having 2 games in hand. They will be hoping that these matches will push them up.
One of the 2 matches that had 4 goals in as both teams just miss out on pushing themselves in the promotion places. Preston would have seen this as the match that would make them into a top 6 team and allow them to push forward towards the end of the season; however, it didn’t end that way. For Watford this was the match that would edge them closer into that congested top 6.
Preston started well scoring early. Lewis Dobbin put them in front in the 20th minute and would get them into halftime leading. After the first 45 minutes they would be sat in those top 6 places and where they hoped to be. However, it took only 10 minutes for those dreams to come crashing down.
Watford would see their first goal come 10 minutes after the second half started thanks to Othmane Maamma before 2 minutes later an own goal from Odel Offiah put them in front for the first time. It looked like they would be closing the gap after this match, before Milutin Osmajic levelled the scores again.
This is how it would then end. Neither team getting what they wanted after these 90 minutes. However, Preston will still be happy as they did manage to get closer to those top 6 spots. Equal on points with Derby in 6th.

This match has caused one of the most incredible changes in the table that wasn’t directly involved with these 2 teams. Blackburn would have seen this result as perfect, finally getting out of the relegation zone and hopefully putting a gap between them and the drop. However, QPR would have hoped for something a bit stronger from this game especially when looking at the chances created.
The match started fast with Blackburn taking the lead in the 21st minute thanks to Mathias Jorgensen. They would have this lead for 14 minutes before QPR hit back with a goal from Koki Saito. The game being level only lasted for 5 minutes as Jorgensen would score his second of the game in the 40th minute. This would be how the score would look at half time before Ryoya Morishita killed the game off making it 3-1.
The big take away from this game was that Blackburn was now out of the relegation zone, and it made Leicester City’s afternoon worse. After being knocked out of the FA Cup after the second loss in a week to Southampton, they would find themselves in the bottom 3. Blackburn will be looking to keep this form going and push away from that bottom 3 making sure they are a Championship team again.

Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Millwall
The final match of the game week saw Millwall who are gradually edging themselves towards the Premier League. The London based club has been fighting for a place back in the Premier League after 2 decades away from the league. They have managed to get even closer to that dream after this match week. As they now sit in 3rd only 3 points behind Coventry.
The game today didn’t off to plan for Millwall after going 1-0 behind thanks to Lowe in the 60th minute. This was a sucker punch for Millwall after having such a strong first half where they limited Sheffield Wednesday to just 2 shots and an xG of 0.06. However, their response was strong. They kept putting the pressure on and in the 72nd minute they have an equaliser thanks to a McGhee own goal. It then only took 2 minutes before they took the lead thanks to Macaulay Langstaff from the bench. Only his 3rd goal this season, but it could be a vital one helping them not drop points against a team they needed all the points from.
Millwall will be hoping that this performance will help push them towards the promotion spots and get them into the promised land of the Premier League for the first time in over 20 years.
