Multiple Clubs Contact Palace Over Star Winger

Chelsea, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich have all contacted Crystal Palace about the possibility of Michael Olise, according to David Ornstein, who Football Park rank as a tier one source.

The Blues held an interest in the Frenchman last year but were turned down by the player as he opted to sign a new contract with the Eagles.

However, Chelsea have now rekindled their interest and have reportedly requested permission to talk once more with his representatives.

As well as the west-London side, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich have both contacted Palace about their interest in the player, requesting to speak to Olise’s entourage.

Within his contract, the 22-year-old has a £60 million release clause.

Why are clubs interested in Michael Olise?

In the second half of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Olise became unstoppable for Palace. After picking up only 18 points from as many games at the start of the season, the Eagles improved massively after Christmas and in the final 15 matches of the season picked up more points than the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Aston Villa. This helped Oliver Glasner’s side to a tenth-place finish, their joint highest finish ever in the Premier League era.

During this run, Olise, Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta formed a relentless trio, contributing to 31 goals between them as Palace impressively dispatched the likes of Villa, Manchester United, West Ham, Newcastle and Liverpool after Christmas.

As a result, the trio have all been rewarded with involvement on the international stage. Both Olise and Mateta are part of Thierry Henry’s French squad for the Summer Olympic Games, whereas Eze is one of four Palace players representing England at this year’s European Championships.

Who will Michael Olise sign for?

As mentioned, within his Palace contract, Olise has a £60 million release clause.

Usually, this can be triggered by any club which wants to sign Olise meaning they are not required to negotiate with the club and can talk straight to the player’s camp.

At just 22 years of age and with his best years still ahead of him, that sum of money will not likely be seen as a deterrent for the clubs wanting to sign him.

Chelsea, Newcastle, Bayern and even Manchester United, who tier one source Fabrizio Romano reported to be interested in the player just a few weeks ago, are all more than capable of spending big money on a player.

However, Matt Law, who Football Park rank as a tier three source, has reported that this may only be available to clubs playing in the UEFA Champions League. If this is the case, it would be a huge boost to Bayern who, unlike both Newcastle and Chelsea, have qualified for the group stages of next season’s tournament. For both English clubs, this would provide a stumbling block as they would be required to negotiate with Palace before getting a deal over the line.

This does not mean that Olise’s move is set in stone though, and it could all come down to the player’s preference as to where his destination may be this summer.
