Netherlands v Scotland | Match Preview

19/03/24 22:36

Ahead of Euro 2024, the Netherlands host Scotland in an international friendly at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Both sides will look to pick up momentum as they head into their Euros campaigns. This being a key battle of mind games ahead of the tournament.

Ronald Koeman’s side struggled to adapt when he was reappointed by the club but more recently have been arguably the team to watch out for in Europe. Unbeaten since June 2023, where they were beaten 4-2 against Croatia, the Netherlands will look to continue their run against Scotland.

In their last game Netherlands battered Gibraltar. Winning 6-0 thanks to a hattrick from Clavin Stengs, and goals from Mats Wieffer, Teun Koopmeiners and Cody Gakpo.

In fairness though Scotland won’t come into this game with much fear themselves. Their Euros qualifying campaign couldn’t have gone much better with wins against Spain and Norway along the way.

Despite the positivity around the qualifying campaign Scotland are without a win in their last five games. Their last win came back in September against Cyprus. Since then losing to England, Spain and France and getting draws against Georgia and Norway. They will need to see an improvement if they are to get anything from this game.

The Netherlands squad announcement came with the usual big names. Virgil Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Nathan Ake all making the squad for example. However arguably the squad was greatly improved with returning faces Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum.

As for Scotland, there aren’t many noticeable changes to their squad. The usual suspects Andrew Robertson, Kieran Tierney, John McGinn and Scott McTominay joining up with the squad.

Since 2003 these two sides have come up against one another just six times. The majority being won by the Netherlands (4). In that period Scotland have only beaten the Dutch once, that game coming in 2003. A 1-0 win thanks to a goal from James McFadden.

This game is bound to be an interesting battle with both sides looking to head into Euro 2024 in the best form possible. A win for either side in this game is bound to be huge.
