Lookman Joins Elites With Decisive Goal Against Barca

Everyone knows that Ademola Lookman has taken his game to another level since leaving English football – a Europa League winner's medal, a hat trick in the same final, and a 14th-place finish at the 2024 Ballon d’Or awards are testament to that.

However, nothing speaks of his improvement more than his record in Europe’s premier continental competition, the Champions League. With his decisive goal against Barcelona on Tuesday night, the Atletico attacker has now netted eight times in the UCL, the third most by any Nigerian in the tournament's history.

The players ahead of him? Obafemi Martins, who sits on a tally of nine, and Victor Osimhen, who had netted 16 across spells at Lille, Napoli and Galatasaray.

Super Eagle Flying High

Ademola has been riding a wave of goalscoring form since arriving at Atletico Madrid in January for £30.5 million, despite netting just three goals in the first half of the season for Italian outfit Atalanta.

The striker, who can also operate behind the centre forward, had scored 52 goals in the prior three seasons, underlining his clearly abundant talent, but it became increasingly obvious that he needed a change of scenery, and Diego Simeone was happy to provide him with that.

Since moving to the Spanish capital, Lookman has not looked back, scoring six times and assisting a further three in his first 16 games for Atleti, a tally which includes two goals in the Champions League.

No one could have seen this coming five years ago – Lookman's most frequently talked about moment in his Premier League stint is undoubtedly his catastrophic attempt at a panenka penalty, which cost his then-side Fulham all three points in added time against West Ham.

A moment like that has the potential to ruin a player's mentality and potentially their career, but Lookman saw it differently. Opting to move away from English football, a country where he had grown up playing at Charlton and Everton, the Super Eagles immediately thrived in a new environment, reaping the rewards from what at the time would have been an immensely difficult decision.

Now, he is being rewarded again in his decision to join Atletico Madrid, as already he is considered one of the club's star players alongside the likes of Julian Alvarez and Alex Baena.

In terms of the two Nigerians ahead of him, the pedigrees speak for themselves. Martins, formerly of both Newcastle and Birmingham City, scored all nine of his Champions League goals in the early years of his career while at Inter Milan.

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen is in the lead by a country mile, despite being just 27 years old. This season alone he added another seven to his UCL tally while getting Galatasaray out of the league phase, and should the striker move to a bigger club, that total is bound to grow exponentially.

For Lookman, records should now take a back seat, as with Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League, he is presented with a unique opportunity to become just the fourth Nigerian to ever lift the Champions League trophy and the first since Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel in 2012.

Individual records exist to motivate others to surpass them, but the balancing act between personal gain and team success is a fine one. Fortunately, with his hat-trick in Atalanta’s victorious Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen back in 2014, Lookman has evidence that he is able to balance both of them, something Atletico will need when they face likely opponents Arsenal in the semi-final.
