Last five results when Newcaslte have played Liverpool:
After the heady highs of 2022/23, where they finally grasped a top four finish, last season was a return to reality for the Toon. Finishing 7th, missing out on European football by one spot, Newcastle were left thinking of what could have been in a campaign where their mid-season form let them down.
While they impressed in their Champions League group, where they beat PSG 4-1 inside a raucous St. James’ Park, they still finished bottom of the group, and were left to focus on domestic competitions for the majority of the season. Even without the distraction of continental football, they failed to capitalize on their emptier schedule, failing to consistently get results.
There were certainly highs, such as a 4-1 win to fellow European football chasers Chelsea, but poor results, such as defeats to Luton Town and Nottingham Forest, would hurt them in their chase for the top six.
With increased funding and considerably more draw since the Saudi takeover, Newcastle have the facilities to build a top team. However, as with many projects, it takes time and patience for a project to truly start delivering.
Best result: Sheffield United 0-8 Newcastle United. (Longstaff 21’, Burn 31’, Botman 35’, Wilson 56’, Gordon 61’, Almiron 68’, Guimarães 73’, Isak 87’).
Worst result: Tottenham 4-1 Newcastle United. (Tottenham: Udogie 26’, Richarlison 38’, 60’, Son 85’. Newcastle: Joelinton 90+1’).
Eddie Howe has handled recent massive changes to the Magpies brilliantly, and has taken them from strength to strength since his appointment in November 2021. Taking them from a relegation battle to Champions league football in 2 years is no mean feat, particularly for a manager who gathered all of his experience at less well-funded Bournemouth.
Since Gareth Soutgate vacated the role of England head coach, Eddie Howe has been the name on everyone’s list. He is a talented English manager (something the country hasn’t been able to produce frequently), and his tactics would suit the national squad. However, it looks unlikely he will leave his post at Newcastle, where he has done so much good work already.
After an impressive rise up the table since his hiring, last season posed a different challenge for him. His side wasn’t able to handle the fixture congestion that came with European football, and after a plethora of injuries early in the season, Newcastle were hardly ever able to field their strongest team.
However, the new season brings with it new promise, and if Newcastle and Howe can keep the majority of the squad fit, they can be right in contention for European football once again.
With Newcastle in the midst of a relegation battle at the time of his arrival, Bruno Guimaraes was considered a real steal when he was signed in January 2022. Already known across Europe as a top midfield talent, Bruno slotted into the center of the park with immediate effect, and yielded instant results.
With seven goals and eight assists last season, he is still as crucial as ever to the way Newcastle operate, to such an extent that he is being linked with various big money moves away from the Tyneside club. However, with nothing concrete materializing as of yet, he looks set for yet another season of pulling the strings in the Premier League.
Part of a dynamic midfield duo alongside countryman and striker-turned-midfielder Joelinton, his endless running and joga bonito creativity help whip up a storm inside of St James’ Park, and when he’s on form, there are very few players who can stop him in his tracks.
While I believe that Newcaslte will be contending for European football again this season, I am also aware that many of their competitors are bolstering their ranks in the transfer market, making it just that little bit harder to close the gap.
Aston Villa, Tottenham, Chelsea and Man United will all be close together towards the end of the season, and it will be fine margins and key players that decide who receives the lion’s share of the points.
Newcastle have a great squad, and it will only improve as the summer winds on, and while they will be close to Europe once again, they may just miss out once more, depending on cup winners elsewhere.
