Brazil Legend In Talks With MLS Club as Time At Santos Draws to a Close

Just 14 months after he received a hero's welcome to his home club Santos in the Brazilian Serie A, Barcelona and PSG legend Neymar looks set to be on the move again after entering into talks with MLS club FC Cincinnati.

With the winger not considered for Carlo Ancelloti’s latest Brazil squad despite regular minutes, and with the World Cup being hosted all over North America just over two months away, it seems that Neymar will be forced to take drastic action if he is to force his way back into contention.

Twilight Years, But No Fairytale Reunion

At the age of 34, there is no doubt that Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer is running out of time as a professional footballer.

After a career punctuated by long injury spells and constant discourse over him and his ability, the years have seen Ney slow down significantly, with any of Europe’s top five leagues far beyond his reach at this point.

Furthermore, he has already decided that Saudi Arabia, another potential retirement destination, is not to his taste – despite earning an eye-watering sum of money every week during his time with Al-Hilal, he managed to play just seven competitive games for the club.

It means that the MLS is the only viable remaining “football retirement home”, and over the years, it has been a popular destination for a whole host of A-list players: Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and David Beckham all spent their final years in the USA, and the list player’s heading to the MLS to finish their careers is only growing more illustrious.

For example, Inter Miami has experienced something of a La Liga takeover, with Sergio Busquets, Rodrigo De Paul, Jordi Alba, Luis Suárez and of course Lionel Messi all playing or having played for the Beckham-owned side.

What has surprised many about Neymar’s links to the main North American football (or soccer) league is that he isn’t in discussion with Inter Miami – of course, he is a former La Liga player and a star at that – more importantly, though, he made up part of arguably the most devastating front three in football history, made up of himself, Suarez and Messi.

Together they formed the iconic MSN, and alongside BBC (Bale, Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo), they dominated the Spanish top flight until Neymar left for his record transfer move to PSG in 2017.

Though it is almost 10 years since they last played together, Messi and Suarez, as well as Inter Miami, would undoubtedly benefit from the added flair, daring and chemistry that Neymar would bring to the side. In our minds, it seems like a no-brainer for the Florida-based club to at least enquire about the availability of the Brazilian.

At the moment, though, it is FC Cincinnati who leads the race for the 34-year-old's signature, with Charlotte FC also believed to be in contention.

Regardless of who he joins in the MLS, it is now looking more likely than ever that Neymar will indeed be reunited with his former Barcelona teammates. However, if a move goes through, it looks more likely to be on opposite sides of the pitch to each other than in the same jersey.
