Peterborough Pounce for Savage - The Question is Why?

There's been a shocking piece of League One news in recent days - Robbie Savage is Peterborough-bound.

We all know Robbie Savage is one of English football’s best-known characters. A tough-tackling, slightly over-aggressive character in his playing days, and a more mellowed-out and always-smiling since hanging up his boots, Savage has done it all – punditry, playing, and putting out the lineups as manager.

However, it’s that last bit that has been getting on the nerves of Peterborough United fans over the last few days - after firing Luke Williams in mid-September following just four wins from their opening 11 games in all competitions, the Posh have now been linked with appointing Savage as their new manager, a decision fans are not happy about.

With Savage now reportedly set to skip taking to the dugout for current club Forest Green Rovers while talks continue, the outcome looks set in stone – so, here’s every reason why Peterborough shouldn’t close the deal for Savage's signature.

Playing Talent Does Not Mean Managerial Mastery

Savage had a successful enough playing career. Though he never took to a top-flight pitch for any of the conventional big six, he did still accumulate a whopping 346 Premier League appearances across stints at Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn, and Derby – though he was never an elite talent, he was a dependable top division option.

We’ve seen both PL and EFL clubs make the same mistake time and time again – ex-players, well-known names in the English football league, are brought simply because of the playing pedigree that they have, which seems like a degree of managerial proficiency, when in fact their coaching techniques couldn’t be further from effective.

We’ve seen it both in Europe and more locally in England - Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Alan Shearer all had a go at management, and all were quickly disposed of because of their complete inability to collect results.

Since taking over at Forest Green, it has seemed that Savage is going the same way – unable to threaten promotion despite playing for one of the best-backed teams in the league, and this campaign boasting four wins after just 10 matches, the last thing he deserves is a promotion to the dugout of a League One team.

Though his reformed, nice-guy exterior makes him a likeable enough bloke, his management style is far from effective in the EPL – though he may have a Northern Premier League title to his name while in charge at Macclesfield FC, the Welshman has anything but proven himself in the National League over the last year and a half.

Desperate Posh

So why do Peterborough United want to bring in Savage? Sitting 23rd in League One and winning just two of their last 22 league fixtures, it’s not as if they have much to lose, but surely gambling their status as a third-tier club on a National League manager is a bit of a stretch.

Well, TalkSPORT and Peterborough United fan Adrian Durham claims to have figured out why the Posh want Savage in the London Road Stadium dugout, and it isn’t for his trophy cabinet.

“Actually, I have been studying Robbie Savage’s Forest Green Rovers team. They can’t finish their dinner but they do create a lot of chances. Our chairman and our fans want to get back to an attacking identity, and it feels like it could be a good fit,” although Durham did add the caveat of, “Whether he and the chairman will get on is another thing.”

Though he has reeled in the back-chat and attitude that graced our screens with clockwork frequency during his playing career, Savage is still quite the character, and his well-known punditry and interview work have created something of a celebrity appeal which is only added to by his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing back in 2011.

Peterborough is already a club that draws a fair amount of noise – a club that should be in the Championship and winners of the EFL Trophy for two consecutive years before Luton ended their streak last season, many would say that it was about time that the Posh left the limelight, hiring a lesser-known, less headline-worthy manager.

Savage’s celebrity status could, of course, be used for good – his presence in the dugout could attract increased backing from the club's hierarchy and better attendance on matchdays – but at a certain point, the club needs to make a decision based on common sense rather than being fuelled by finances.

Luke Williams needed to go; that much was clear – what isn’t clear is why the League One side are so keen on making a bang average manager their new man in the dugout.

Savage has received every backing and brought every player he has asked for since taking charge at Forest Green, and even that wasn’t enough to secure the club's safe passage back into the football league. What makes them think that he could take them back to the second tier?
