Harvey Elliott could leave Liverpool this summer despite Arne Slot confirming the midfielder will return to the club for pre-season preparations following his loan spell at Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old heads back to Anfield on a high after helping Villa win the Europa League last night to see the Claret and Blues first trophy in over 30 years. Although he played a limited role throughout the campaign, the midfielder was part of Unai Emery’s squad as Villa secured a memorable continental triumph.

That success, however, may not be enough to guarantee Elliott a long-term future at Liverpool. Reports suggest the Reds would be willing to listen to offers in the region of £25million this summer as Slot continues shaping his squad ahead of the new season. Elliott is expected to be assessed during pre-season, but growing interest from elsewhere means his future remains firmly up in the air.

The former Fulham youngster endured a frustrating spell at Villa Park overall, struggling to secure consistent minutes in a highly competitive squad. A permanent transfer clause included in the loan agreement was reportedly not triggered due to a lack of appearances, meaning Elliott will now return to Merseyside.

Despite that, his reputation across English football remains strong. Elliott is still regarded as one of the more technically gifted young players in the country and has already built valuable Premier League and European experience at a relatively young age.

Newly-promoted Coventry City have now emerged as a potential destination in what would be one of the surprise stories of the summer transfer window. Frank Lampard is expected to strengthen aggressively following Coventry’s return to the Premier League, and Elliott’s versatility to play multiple positions as well as his attacking quality are understood to appeal to the club.

A £25million move would represent a major statement of intent from Coventry, although wages and competition from other clubs could complicate any deal.
