Relegation Ties and The Fight For Europe - La Liga Round Up 35 Saturday Roundup: Highlights, Scores and Results

Another massive day in La Liga with huge results at both ends of the table. We saw dominant wins, title race pressure and some serious twists in the battle for Europe and survival.

Here is how today’s action played out in Spain.

Sevilla FC 2-1 RCD Espanyol

This was a proper tense game between two sides desperate for points. Sevilla started brightly and looked much sharper in possession early on, but Espanyol defended really well and made life difficult for them.

The atmosphere inside the stadium was edgy throughout because Sevilla fans know this season has been nowhere near good enough. Every misplaced pass was being groaned at and you could feel the pressure building.

Espanyol actually had some decent spells themselves and looked dangerous on the break a few times. Sevilla had more of the ball overall but lacked that killer instinct in the final third which has been a recurring problem for them this season. They managed to take their chances today however, and just about get three points over the line, after a fantastic last minute winner.

A massive game in terms of the table too. Sevilla are still trying to claw themselves towards the top half after this result while Espanyol are fighting to stay clear of trouble near the bottom.

Elche CF 1-1 Deportivo Alavés

Huge game near the bottom of the table and you could feel the nerves from the first whistle. Neither side wanted to make the first mistake and the opening stages were really scrappy because of that.

Elche grew into the game more as it went on and looked the more threatening side going forward, especially down the wings. Alavés had their moments on the counter but lacked quality in the final third and wasted a couple of really promising attacks.

This was the kind of match where one goal always felt like it would decide it. Every tackle felt massive and both sides were fully aware of what was at stake. A result here could genuinely decide who survives this season. Neither side managed to find a winner, a point will have to do for both.

With only a few games left, every point matters now and both teams are right in the middle of the relegation scrap.

Atlético Madrid 0-1 RC Celta de Vigo

Big shock in Madrid. Atlético had most of the ball and controlled large parts of the game, but they just could not break Celta down. It was one of those frustrating afternoons where every attack seemed to end with a blocked shot or poor final pass.

Celta defended brilliantly and carried a threat on the counter all game. Then came the big moment. Borja Iglesias produced a fantastic finish to stun the home crowd and suddenly Atlético were chasing the game.

The pressure really got to Atlético late on. Crosses started flying into the box, players looked frustrated and the crowd began turning as the clock ticked down. Celta held firm though and grabbed a massive win in the race for Europe.

That result is huge for Celta’s Champions League hopes while Atlético missed a massive chance to strengthen their own position near the top.

Real Sociedad 2-2 Real Betis

Probably the game of the day in Spain. This had everything.

Betis looked in complete control at one stage after two brilliant goals put them firmly ahead. Antony was excellent again and Abde’s finish was unbelievable. Sociedad looked stunned and the home fans were starting to get frustrated.

But Sociedad kept pushing. They had two goals ruled out for offside and it felt like one of those nights where nothing would go for them. Eventually though, they found a breakthrough and suddenly the momentum completely shifted.

The late equaliser from the penalty spot sent the stadium wild and capped off a brilliant comeback. Betis then had Ruibal sent off right at the end which summed up the chaos of the final few minutes.

Huge point for Sociedad mentally, while Betis will be gutted they let the win slip in such an important game for the European race.
