Reunion On The Cards As Manchester United Target West Ham Star

Manchester United are looking to build on their FA Cup glory after a season of ups and downs.

With Erik ten Hag’s future finally sorted and the two sides in discussions over a contract extension, all focus will now be on recruitment.

Having already entered negotiations with Everton and Bologna for Jarrad Branthwaite and Joshua Zirkzee, the Red Devils have now turned their attention to West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are seriously considering bringing in a new midfielder - with Casemiro likely to depart.

Mexico captain Edson Álvarez is thought to be highly appreciated by ten Hag, having worked together at Ajax.

A deal is expected to be difficult to complete due to West Ham’s stance on Álvarez, who is considered an important player - having joined a season ago from Ajax for £35m.

The 26 year-old registered two goals and two assists in 42 appearances for the Hammers in his debut campaign, although his impact defensively is what has Manchester United targeting the Mexico international.

Álvarez averaged 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game, alongside an 84.5% pass completion percentage in all competitions.

However, an accumulation of 20 yellow cards - including 11 in the Premier League had seen the West Ham midfielder receive criticism from then-manager David Moyes.

“We lost him earlier in the season through suspension, we’ve had him out now and we’ll lose him for the game in Leverkusen in midweek as well. It begins to have an effect on you that you’re losing him for so many games.”

“We need to try and find a way where he doesn’t put himself in that situation because it affects the team and it has done in recent weeks.”

“He’s been a big influence on us since we signed him at the start of the season. He’s been hugely important to the team.

“I’ve not had a conversation with him because I’d expect him to be experienced enough to understand that you can’t go about getting yellow cards every week.”

Ten Hag and Álaverz won two Eredivisie titles and the KNVB Cup in four seasons together at Ajax.

A move would also see Álaverz link-up with former teammates Lisandro Martinez and Anthony in Manchester as well.

With such history it comes as no surprise that a reunion is potentially on the cards, but with West Ham keen to keep a hold of their key player heading into the Julen Lopetegui era it’s to be seen whether a deal can be made.
