Romania vs Netherlands: Team News, Lineups and Predictions

Romania vs Netherlands Preview

Group E winners Romania look to keep an amazing story continuing as they face off against Netherlands on Tuesday the 2nd of July, aiming to reach the last eight at a major tournament for only the third time in history. Netherlands, who qualified for the knockouts as one of the four best third placed teams, are aiming to avoid a second consecutive exit in the round-of-16 after a 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic at Euro 2020.

Coverage of the match begins at 16:30pm BST on BBC One with kick-off scheduled for 17:00pm BST.

Romania vs Netherlands Team News

Romania are without Nicusor Bancu who is suspended after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament in their final group match against Slovakia. Otherwise there are no other injury concerns for head coach Edward Iordanescu.

Likewise, Netherlands have no injury concerns or suspensions.

With that in mind, we can likely expect similar lineups to those in the final group games for both sides, with the exception of Bancu for Romania but including goalscorers last time out: Razvan Marin (Romania), Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay (Netherlands).

Romania vs Netherlands Predicted Lineups

Romania: Florin Nita, Deian Sorescu, Andrei Burca, Radu Dragusin, Andrei Ratu, Marius Marin, Florinel Coman, Nicolae Stanciu, Razvan Marin, Ianis Hagi, Denis Dragus.

Netherlands: Bart Verbruggen, Nathan Ake, Virgil van Dijk, Stefan de Vrij, Lutsharel Geertruida, Joey Veerman, Jerdy Schouten, Tijjani Reijnders, Cody Gakpo, Donyell Malen, Memphis Depay.

Romania vs Netherlands Head to head Record

Romania won what ended up being a very tight group after one win, one loss and one draw. They finished with a 1-1 draw against Slovakia, leading the group only due to scoring more goals (four) than any other team.

Netherlands have struggled to set the world alight so far this tournament, after a 2-1 win in their opening match against Poland they finished the group with a 0-0 draw against France and a 3-2 loss to Austria. The Dutch will take some confidence in the fact they have won 10 out of 14 matchups against Romania in their history and will hope to make that 11 out of 15.

Romania vs Netherlands Prediction

My experience of making score predictions for this tournament leaves a lot to be desired for, in fact I have not predicted a single score line correctly in any of my previews. I am confident in one thing though and that is that this match is sure to bring goals.

Both sides have been strong up from and weak at the back. They have both scored four goals so far, with Romania conceding three and Netherlands conceding four across all of their group matches. You can expect plenty of goals in this match in what should be a very lively attacking showcase.

I predict a final score of 3-2 to Romania, the Romanians continuing their shock journey at the tournament and handing the Netherlands another disappointing exit.
