Senegal's AFCON Success Shows Why Sadio Mané Has Plenty More to Give
Last night, Senegal clinched their second-ever AFCON crown in a final that will be talked about for generations. A night of chaos, tension, and pure football theatre, where at the heart of it all stood Sadio Mané, leading by example from the first whistle of the tournament to the last. When the pressure peaked and the nation held its breath, Mané dragged the Lions of Teranga over the line, steering them away from the brink of a global embarrassment and into African immortality.

Now a two-time AFCON champion, Mané has cemented his place at the very summit of Senegalese football history, a legend in every sense of the word. Today, we’re diving into his journey, his achievements, where he truly ranks among Africa’s all-time greats, and just how much more this icon still has left to give.
From Humble Beginnings
Born in the small village of Bambali, Senegal, Mané represented Génération Foot, a Senegalese football academy in the country's capital, Dakar. It was clear from an early age that there was something special about him, which prompted a move to French side FC Metz in 2011.
After lighting it up at Metz, the teenage winger’s rise began to gather real momentum. A move to Red Bull Salzburg followed, and it didn’t take long for Mané to explode onto the European stage. In Austria, he became a nightmare for defenders, scoring 31 goals in 62 appearances, while also making his debut for Senegal.
As it always does when a star is born, England came calling. In 2014, Mané joined a newly promoted Southampton, and it was on the south coast that the rest of the Premier League truly woke up to him. The pace, the fearlessness, the directness, every performance felt like a warning shot, but one burst of madness ensured his name would never be forgotten. Against a woeful Aston Villa, Mané produced the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history, scored in just 2 minutes and 56 seconds, a record that still stands

By then, it wasn’t just Southampton fans paying attention. Mané was becoming a global force. Blistering dribbles and a striker’s instinct earned the Senegalese international a move to Anfield.
"Oh Mané! Mané!" - The Liverpool Story
It didn’t take long for Liverpool fans to fall in love with Sadio Mané, and it took even less time for him to repay them on the pitch. A key piece of Jürgen Klopp’s revolution at Anfield, Mané became the spark in a new era, forming a devastating attacking trio alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
Came from Southampton for only £34m and one of Klopp first signings made, Sadio Mané has been revolutionary since day 1 and has formed one of the best front 3 in the world with Salah and Firmino. 77G+34A in 161 appearances.

In 6 seasons Liverpool, Mané completed the set. 2019 saw him lift the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. In 2020, Mané lifted the Premier League. In addition to an already blockbuster trophy cabinet, Mané helped Liverpool lift an FA Cup and a League Cup in 2022.
On this day in 2016, Sadio Mane joined Liverpool from Southampton for JUST £36m.

Mané left Liverpool in 2022 to join German force Bayern Munich. After spending only one season at the club, the player racked up yet another league title. Then, the allure of the Saudi Pro League came calling and Mané signed for Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr.
Dominance With Senegal
On top of his accolades with Liverpool, Mané was dragging Senegal into the limelight. Appearing in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Senegal failed to get out of the group stage. The World Cup in 2022 saw them make the knockout rounds, losing to England in the Round of 16. Despite sparks of light on a global scale, Senegal were not quite there yet. However, in Africa, Senegal were making plenty of noise.
The 2021 AFCON saw Senegal go all the way with Mané captaining the side. The final took place between Senegal and Egypt and saw Mané face his club compatriot, fellow partner in crime, Mohamed Salah. Winning the game on penalties, Mané lifted Senegal's first ever AFCON title. This was met with loud appraisals from World Football and earned Mané a second placed finish in the Ballon D'or, becoming the second-highest ranked African player in the history of the award behind George Weah who won the accolade in 1995.

As mentioned, Senegal lifted another AFCON title last night, but this one felt different. With an experienced backline behind him and a ruthless midfield engine beside him, the Lions of Teranga were driven forward by Sadio Mané. At 33 years old, he led by example from start to finish, racking up five goals and assists across the tournament and carrying Senegal through the moments that mattered most.
Then came a scene nobody will forget. After a shocking VAR penalty decision, chaos erupted and Senegal’s players stormed off the pitch. With the match delayed, and the world watching in disbelief, it felt like everything was collapsing, but when Senegal needed a leader, Mané stepped forward. He emerged from the tunnel and dragged his teammates back onto the field, demanding they fight “like men”, staring down the storm as if he’d take on the entire night by himself.

Eventually, order returned. Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to win in extra time. But make no mistake, without Mané’s courage and command in that moment, Senegal never makes it over the line.
Where Mané Now Ranks
When considering what he has won at both a club level and an international level, one may begin to consider where Mané sits among the greats of African football. George Weah, Samuel Eto'o, Dider Drogba, Yaya Toure, Jay-Jay Okocha, Lucas Radebe, and countless others are all players that sit firmly at the helm when it comes to discussing Africa's finest, but the man from Senegal may just take the top spot now.

What stands out with Mané compared to the others is that, Drogba never won the AFCON, meanwhile Mané has two to his name as a captain. George Weah didn't win the AFCON and won the Ballon D'or, yet Mané came second in the Ballon D'or. Samuel Eto'o was one of the most feared strikers of a generation and has the Champions League medals to prove it, and on top of that he won the AFCON with Cameroon, yet he only achieved that feat once.

At the club level, Mané sits not only amongst the greats of Africa, but among the greats of world football in terms of trophies won. When looking at if from an international perspective, not many captains can say they brought continental glory to their country twice.
We'll let you decide where he ranks in that category.
What Comes Next?
As the AFCON fireworks begin to fade, Mané and Senegal now return to their clubs with domestic business still to finish. Al Nassr currently sit second in the Saudi Pro League, and you can be sure Mané will have a major role to play as they push for the title.

Senegal’s next competitive tournament is in the summer at the FIFA World Cup. Drawn in a group alongside France and Norway, the African champions face a tough test if they want to reach the knockout rounds. Mané turns 34 this year, and many will wonder if AFCON 2026 was his final dance.
The World Cup could be the last time we see Sadio Mané wearing Senegal’s green and gold on the biggest competitive stage, and if his AFCON fury is anything to go by, you might want to place your bets now.
