Senesi Scouted by Europe's Elite as Contract Expiry Looms

South Coast Centre Back Targeted by European Giants Ahead of Contract Expiry

AFC Bournemouth have done a remarkable job of staying competitive in the Premier League despite a devastating summer transfer window which saw their backline torn to shreds.

Centre-back pairing Ilya Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen departed for PSG and Real Madrid, respectively, while Milos Kerkez went to Liverpool and Kepa Arrizabalaga moved to London to don the Arsenal jersey.

The one positive that they could take was that they kept hold of Argentine centre back Marcos Senesi, but recent rumours indicate that the defender could be the next to leave the Vitality Stadium, with some of Europe’s biggest clubs pursuing his signature.

Why is Senesi a Wanted Man?

Brought in from Feyenoord for what has transpired to be a bargain fee of £12.8 million, Senesi has been a revelation in the Bournemouth backline since his arrival in the summer of 2022.

Though not blessed with pace, the 28-year-old more than makes up for that with elite awareness, superb positioning, and a knack for winning every duel he finds himself competing in. This season, with the absence of Zabarnyi and Huijsen, Senesi has seen his workload double in the centre of defence, and he has risen admirably to the task.

His stats speak for themselves; he sits at or above the 95th percentile for successful tackles (35), interceptions (31), blocked shots (17) and recoveries (84), while he has also proved himself to be a nuisance up the other end, notching three assists, and in the 100th percentile of PL centre backs for successful crosses (7) and chances created (17).

Combining his talents at both ends with his rare standing as a left-footed centre back, Bournemouth have had an absolute gem on their hands over the last three and a half seasons, and with him in the side have been able to reach new heights in England’s top flight.

Unfortunately, his superb all-round ability has not gone unnoticed, and though Bournemouth somehow managed to convince him to stay in the summer, it looks unlikely they will be able to repeat the trick, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and most recently Juventus taking key interest in the Argentine’s contract situation.

Senesi’s contract on the South Coast expires in June, meaning that as of now, any potential suitors may begin negotiating with the Argentine if they are tempted to sign him on a free transfer in the summer, as per the Bosman ruling.

Recent rumours suggest that Juventus boast the most concrete interest, and are already laying plans for Senesi to join them once his contract expires, with a contract offer to be ready as soon as this month. His current market value sits at a relatively good value of £15 million, but any side worth their salt will want to save money where possible - why spend £15 million now when you can get the same player for free in the summer?

With his left-sided preference, Senesi would be a perfect fit for Luciano Spalletti’s three-at-the-back formation, and his passing range, anticipation and growing experience can only be an asset to whoever he does join. With the two Spanish giants also circling, Senesi could fast become one of the most wanted free agents of all time.
