Sheffield United Star Set For Exit With Direct Replacement Planned

Blades Brace For Star Departure

Sheffield United's season so far has been something of a rollercoaster. After an abysmal start to the campaign left them rock-bottom in the EFL Championship, Chris Wilder returned to replace Ruben Selles (who had replaced Wilder) to steady the ship and get some lift-off going at Bramall Lane.

After a recent four-game winning run, the Blades have lost and drawn their previous two encounters and sit a disappointing 18th in the table, though only 11 points away from the play-off spots in England's second tier – play-offs, of course, that they were defeated in the final of last season at the hands of Sunderland to miss out on Premier League promotion at the first time of asking.

As the rumours of the coming window gather pace, one star name within Wilder's ranks looks set to leave the club in some capacity in the not-so-distant future. Fortunately for them, an ideal replacement may have just opened up for them...

One In, One Out at Sheffield United

According to Football Insider, Gustavo Hamer will likely be set to depart the club if they fail to achieve Premier League promotion this season.

The 28-year-old Dutchman got his first taste of top-flight football in England amidst Sheffield United's relegated team of the 23/24 campaign, where he cut a star figure following his transfer from Championship side Coventry City to start the season - he netted four goals and six assists as The Blades dropped down to the second tier once again.

He had been rumoured to be taking a trip to the exit door over the course of the summer, with VFL Wolfsburg keen on his signature over in the Bundesliga, but without anything coming to fruition. Hamer is expected to be of interest once again this January, and although The Blades do not wish to sell, they may have to prepare for life without him - he will enter the final year of his contract next season and will not likely consider a new contract should Sheffield United not escape the Championship, meaning the club will only have three windows left to cash in on him or else lose his talents for nothing at all.

After an 18 G+A haul in the Championship last season with The Blades, Hamer has only provided three goals in some capacity over the course of the season so far, though his performances away from direct numbers have still drawn some praise.

Hamer will still attract plenty of interest this winter and Sheffield United may force themselves to let him go. However, they are already looking at new faces for his position this winter.

Wantaway Rangers Star on Wilder's Radar

Joe Rothwell of Rangers is the man in question, with Sheffield United amongst the chasing pack for his services ahead of the January transfer window.

The midfielder is being strongly linked with a move back to the Championship this January. with his move up to the Scottish Premiership not drawing much adoration for his performances thus far. As such, the club are reportedly happy to let him leave Glasgow at the earliest possible opportunity - which would be next month.

Chris Wilder's side are one of the leading interested parties in Rothwell, and with Hamer's future up in the air, the time may be perfect for the former Bournemouth midfielder to escape his Scottish nightmare and make an EFL return.

The 30-year-old has earned consecutive promotions from England's second division over the course of his career and, despite his recent struggles on the field, would be a strong addition for the Blades, especially with Hamer potentially heading out the door.
