Sheffield Wednesday to swoop in on free agent Elliot Lee

Wrexham’s Elliot Lee is expected to leave the Welsh side by mutual consent, with recently relegated Sheffield Wednesday poised to snap up the free agent per Rich Fay

Joining Wrexham in 2022 from Luton, Lee quickly became a mainstay in the squad, playing 148 times across three seasons and helping the Red Dragons achieve three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship.

During his three-year stint, Lee was named in the Team of the Season for both the National League and League Two, while scoring 40 goals to help Wrexham on their remarkable ascent.

Ahead of their first season in the second tier of English football since 1982, however, Lee struggled to earn minutes, with Wrexham spending big to acquire the likes of Lewis O’Brien, George Thomason and Josh Windass in midfield.

He was subsequently loaned out to Doncaster Rovers in January, where he played in 18 matches, scoring on three occasions—one of which was a winner against former club Barnsley—and providing two assists.

Lee’s contract will now be mutually terminated, as confirmed by Rich Fay of the RobRyanRed Podcast, with Wrexham fans thankful for his years of service to the club.

Wednesday are one of the sides hoping to snap up the experienced midfielder, with the Owls bound by an EFL-agreed spending limit, meaning the club are having to recruit free agents and loanees until the next transfer window.

They are not the only side eager to add Lee to their squad, however, with a host of unnamed sides also desperate to add experience to their League One ranks.
