The EFL’s independent disciplinary commission ruled that Southampton should be removed from the play-offs, with Middlesbrough reinstated to face Hull City at Wembley. Saints have also been handed a four-point deduction for next season after admitting multiple breaches of EFL regulations.

How Did Southampton’s ‘Spygate’ Scandal Start?

The controversy began before Southampton’s play-off semi-final against Middlesbrough.

On May 7, just two days before the first leg, Middlesbrough reported that a Southampton staff member, now named as Saints intern William Salt, had allegedly been caught observing and filming one of their training sessions.

The Investigation Quickly Became Bigger

What initially looked like a one-off incident quickly became something much more serious once the EFL uncovered further admitted breaches linked to matches against Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Leicester City earlier in the season.

According to the league, Southampton admitted to unauthorised observation or filming of opposition training sessions ahead of fixtures against all four clubs.

Ironically, Southampton’s results in those matches were hardly dominant.

That detail has become one of the strangest parts of the entire controversy, with fans joking that the spying operation “didn’t even work”.

Southampton Charged By The EFL

Once Middlesbrough submitted their complaint, the EFL formally opened disciplinary proceedings against Southampton.

The matter quickly escalated because the league no longer viewed the Middlesbrough incident in isolation. Instead, investigators believed there was evidence of repeated breaches across multiple fixtures during the season.

As more details emerged, pressure began growing on the EFL to take strong action before the play-off final took place.

Southampton Still Beat Middlesbrough

The club believed a fine alone would not be enough given the scale of the allegations and the financial stakes involved in promotion.

EFL Expel Southampton From The Final

The case was heard by an independent disciplinary commission on May 19.

In a dramatic ruling, Southampton were expelled from the Championship play-off final, and Middlesbrough were reinstated for a game scheduled to be played in 3 days time.

The EFL reportedly concluded that the integrity of the competition had been undermined and that allowing Southampton to compete at Wembley would damage confidence in the play-offs.

Southampton’s punishment does not end with expulsion from the play-offs.
