After a poor start to the season, former Cardiff City head coach Steve Morison leaves Sutton United, who find themselves in 22nd place in the Enterprise National League and free-falling into relegation candidacy.
Sutton United’s only win of the season came in an impressive outing against Mark Hughes’ Carlisle in South West London, although a string of three losses followed and reaffirmed their poor league position.

Morison’s departure makes way for first team coach Jon Meeney to take over temporarily until a new head coach is appointed.
Former striker Morison, who scored 190 goals during his illustrious playing career, took a foray into management, starting at Cardiff City, as he got promoted from managing the U23s to the first team after Mick McCarthy was given his marching orders during The Bluebirds' 2021/2022 Championship campaign.
With Cardiff sat in 18th in September of the following season, Morison was dismissed after 45 games in charge and replaced with Mark Hudson.
The preceding summer, Morison made quite a few steps down the football pyramid to join then-Isthmian Premier League side Hornchurch, who were competing at the top of the league with a strong budget for their level.
Hornchurch owner described Morison’s start to the season as “the best he’s ever seen”, which gave The Urchins the foundation to go on and win the league and gain promotion to the National League South, losing only once in 22 games before his decision to take up a position at then-League Two Sutton United.
On the final day of the season, Sutton United’s relegation to the National League was confirmed after a 4-4 draw to MK Dons sealed The U’s fate. Morison stuck to his word when he then claimed that he ‘was not going anywhere’ and another Non-League adventure awaited the London-born boss.

Morison’s maiden crusade into the top step of Non-league ended in a lukewarm 12th-place finish, with no signs of a bounce back to the EFL.
Presently, Sutton has one win so far this season, and the writing was on the wall for Morison, who will now assess his option following the third dismissal of his managerial career. Big Isthmian League sides such as current strugglers Dartford, who may want a rejig to kick-start their season, could be digging around for the former Championship manager.
Sutton United will begin their search for a new boss, likely with the hope of aiming high for recently axed York City boss Adam Hinshelwood to take the reins of The U’s. Candidates will be assessed and a decision will be made in due course.
