Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon, with the 21-year-old now travelling to undergo his medical ahead of a deadline-day move.

The deal is reportedly worth an initial £25 million, with around £4 million potentially following in add-ons, making this a major piece of business for Sunderland.

Fofana is a Belgium international and one of Lyon's most highly-rated young players. He is primarily a left winger but offers plenty of flexibility across the attack, which should give Sunderland another dangerous option going forward.

Arsenal had been exploring a late deal for Fofana, with Lyon previously valuing him at around €40 million, but Sunderland have moved decisively and managed to get an agreement in place instead.

Fofana had previously rejected the opportunity to join Hull City, but Sunderland's position is very different after their impressive 2025/26 season and qualification for European football.

That could have played a major role in attracting him to Wearside, especially because Sunderland should also be able to offer him a much clearer route to regular first-team football.

A move to Arsenal would have brought far greater competition for minutes, whereas Sunderland can potentially give Fofana the opportunity to become an important part of their attack immediately.

Sunderland have been looking for another left-sided attacker, and Fofana appears to fit exactly what they need. At just 21 years old, he also has plenty of room to develop further while already possessing significant senior experience.

The agreement is now in place and Fofana is travelling for his medical, leaving Sunderland on the verge of completing one of the most eye-catching deals of deadline day.
