Talks break down between Strasbourg and Swansea

Soumaila Coulibaly’s transfer to Swansea has fallen through, with the French footballer now seemingly set to remain in League One with Strasbourg.

According to Marc Mechenoua of Onze Mondial, there is no issue with the medical examination, contrary to what may have been written.

A product of the Paris Saint-Germain academy, Coulibaly made his debut for German outfit Borussia Dortmund after signing for them in 2021. However, after three seasons in which he was loaned to Royal Antwerp and Brest while making just two first-team appearances for Dortmund, the young defender pushed for a move to Strasbourg, who signed him for approximately £6.4 million.

At Strasbourg, Coulibaly has experienced a repeat of his time at Dortmund, with the defender finding first-team minutes difficult to come by. Across the 2025/26 season, he was loaned to Brest for a second time, making 16 appearances as Brest fell to 12th in the table.

Swansea have been looking for reinforcements to solidify their side in the Championship and were willing to take a punt on a player whose career has been a mishmash of loans and a failure to secure regular first-team football with his parent club.

Having finished 11th in the Championship last season, there was some muted hope amongst the Swans that they may be able to push on from their semi-successful 2025/26 season and achieve a play-off place, with England’s second tier deciding to add an additional two spaces to the play-offs from this season going forward.

The Jacks have made a strong start to the campaign, drawing 0-0 against Sheffield United, sandwiched between two victories against Stoke City and Derby County. That has seen them sitting pretty in third, occupying the top play-off position.

It looks now, however, that Coulibaly will be staying at Strasbourg for the time being.
