Paraguayan Senator Plans to Sue Mbappe for Gender-Based Violence

We’ll be amazed if you have missed this by now, but if you haven’t been on your phone, let us catch you up: Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla has threatened to sue Kylian Mbappé for gender-based violence after launching a racism-laden tirade at the French forward after he netted the only goal of the game to dump Paraguay out of the World Cup in the round of 16.

Three days ago, Amarilla took to Instagram in order to launch her verbal assault on the World Cup top scorer, and it quickly went viral, with very few believing that a figure so high up in international government would bring such thoughts to a public forum.

Her initial post, which unforgivingly labelled Mbappe as a “colonised Cameroonian”, and claimed that “the most educated creatures he ever heard were chimpanzees”, was immediately deplored by countless people across social media.

Mbappé himself responded to the heinous post shortly after, with his barbed retort saying, “You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position," while also explaining that thanks to her shocking comments, “the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup.”

That looked to be the end of the saga, with Mbappe quite rightly having the last word. However, in recent hours, Amarilla has resurfaced and not only defended her original comments but has also threatened to bring legal action against Kylian Mbappé for gender-based violence.

Doubling and Tripling Down

One would have thought Amarilla would have seen the error in her initial words – not only was she overtly racist towards one of the best players in the world, but she also brought her words to a public forum with remarkable ease and poise, indicating that this is not an unusual discussion for her to have.

Though she deleted soon after, enough people had screenshotted it to send it into the realism of virality, and one would think she would feel shame at her sudden infamy.

Apparently, though, she is worse at reading the room than first thought, as after Mbappe responded through his social media accounts, the senator, who has also held the post of national deputy, published an open letter directly to Mbappe, doubling down on her initial remarks while also apologising for the names she called him.

The final paragraph of her letter was what stood out: “I didn’t attack your skin colour or your preferences. Don’t you attack me by status as a woman and a politician. Retract your statement, honour your French citizenship, and apologise to me. Otherwise, I may initiate legal action for gender violence.”

Absolutely mind-boggling – you cannot have it both ways. Either you issue an apology or admit culpability, but you cannot back yourself in what you said at the same time. It completely undercuts the message you are trying to send.

Unsurprisingly, the Paris Prosecutor's office officially launched an investigation against Amarilla on charges of ‘public insult with a racist character’ and ‘incitement to hatred’, and though the French punishment would likely not be applicable if the charges were found to be true, it would carry a sentence of one year in prison and a €45,000 fine.

Remarkably, it gets even weirder. Asked about the scenario earlier today, Amarilla dug her hole even deeper, going as far as to issue another direct threat to Mbappe, using another famous footballer as an example.

Speaking to the press, Amarilla said, “I’d tell him to be careful with Paraguayans. We already put Ronaldinho in prison for corruption. Don’t underestimate me. I can take you to court.”

She followed this with another stubborn retort, which, if anything, indicates that nothing will ever change her mind on the matter: “My insults against Mbappe? ' I have a sacred right to free speech and freedom of opinion. Just because I am a senator, it doesn’t mean I can no longer say what I want. I will not apologise; let them beat me up.”

Ronaldinho’s name was brought up in reference to when the Brazilian legend served a brief stint in Paraguayan jail for entering the country with fraudulent Paraguayan passports, despite claiming to this day that he was unaware they were fake.

This, however, seems a lot more serious than some doctored papers, as with one of the most reputable players in the world going head to head with a member of international government, there is no way of telling who is going to make the next move or, indeed, what it might be.

Mbappe is (rightly) yet to remove his original response, ignoring the terms of Amarilla’s open letter, a show of power and of resilience. However, the catch is that as long as that response is out there, Amarilla will have ammunition to fling the Frenchman’s way.

The last thing the 27-year-old needs during a red hot World Cup campaign is the threat of an invasive and intensely personal lawsuit hanging over his head. And yet, if he takes down the statement, then he is allowing the racist senator to win.

It is truly one of the most scandalous and bizarre incidents of the World Cup, and indeed in the footballing world, in 2026, and very few would be willing to hazard a guess at the next chapter of this mind-boggling saga.
