Thierno Barry Responds as Arsenal-Supporting Friends Attacked Amongst Everton's Away Support
Everton and France's Thierno Barry took to social media to raise his anger towards the Everton fans after the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates yesterday. Barry's friends, who were supporting Arsenal, were attacked after celebrating the Arsenal goals whilst sat in the Everton section of the stadium. The fans were wearing Arsenal shirts in the Everton end and appeared to show immense disrespect to the rest of the Everton fans watching.

They were wearing Arsenal tops and they jumped up when they scored. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Fans remain divided over whether Everton supporters were justified in their reaction. On one hand, the behaviour of Thierno Barry’s friends was widely seen as disrespectful towards the home crowd. On the other, football has worked hard to move beyond the days when confrontations in the stands were commonplace, meaning the Toffees faithful cannot emerge from the situation entirely blameless either.
It is generally understood that when sitting among opposing supporters, the safest and most respectful approach is to keep celebrations low-key and avoid provoking those around you. That, however, was clearly not the case here. And with Barry himself managing just six goals in 30 Premier League appearances this season, the last thing he needs is further attention drawn to his entourage. Publicly antagonising fans is unlikely to win him any sympathy.

From our perspective, Thierno Barry’s entourage did not handle the situation wisely. Provoking or celebrating loudly in a section full of opposition supporters is rarely going to end well, and a bit more awareness and restraint would have avoided the situation entirely. That said, football stadiums should be environments where supporters can attend without feeling threatened or unsafe. Regardless of what may have sparked the moment, it is never fair for any group of fans to feel intimidated or at risk while watching a match. Respect and common sense on both sides are what keep the atmosphere passionate but safe.
