Even with a promotion out of League One last season, Birmingham City have been through a relatively underwhelming season compared to their ambitious goals to rise back through the divisions.

However, the club have failed to achieve a consistent run of form and follow suit on their self-imposed aims for the season, after enjoying a League One campaign that featured an EFL-record-setting points haul on their way to hoisting the third-tier title last season. This season, by contrast, looked to conclude with a devoutly un-inspired mid-table finish.

Sat in 14th after a 1-1 draw away at promotion-chasing Hull City, Birmingham are unlikely to experience much movement in the table as the season comes to a close - this may force the hand of their ever-ambitious Knighthead owners when it comes to the position of manager Chris Davies.

Reports throughout the majority of the season have called the tenancy of Davies into question, with no short supply of Birmingham supporters also having turned their backs towards the former Tottenham assistant. Many fans reportedly favour a managerial change, if they are to complete their ascension and make a return to the Premier League.

However, Football League World have revealed a surprising, ambitious appointment that the Blues may be aiming for should a switch be made in the summer.

Thomas Frank has been out of work since his own dismissal from an ill-fated position with Tottenham in February, and Birmingham City are plotting a shocking move for the Danish coach to replace Davies at the helm of their project.

This would undoubtedly be heralded as a move to strengthen the Blue's hopes of promotion to the Premier League in the 2026/27 campaign. Frank's crowning glory as a coach came during his near-seven-year spell with Brentford. Through a cocktail of savvy spending and data-led recruitment against a limited budget, he took the Bees to the Premier League and established the club as a top-flight mainstay - the club are now under the watch of Keith Andrews, and are battling for a spot in Europe next term.

His time at Brentford led the Dane to catch the attention of Spurs, who appointed Frank as the succesor to Ange Postecoglou back in the summer. However, regardless of heavy backing in terms of transfers with the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Mathys Tel joining the Lilywhites, Frank earned just 13 wins from his 38 games in North London and was knocked out early from both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He was given his P45 just over two months back, with Spurs sat 16th in the Premier League and facing a now-genuine threat of relegation.
