Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal | Match Preview

23/04/24 21:59

The 195th North London derby takes place on Sunday afternoon, as Tottenham Hotspur host Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This is sure to be a fantastic game with both sides looking to pick up valuable points as we head into the latter stages of the Premier League season.

Tottenham come into this game currently sitting 5th in the table on 60 points. However, crucially, they are six points off of Aston Villa in forth with two games in hand on them as well, Champions League football is still very much on for them and picking up three points in a game like this will be crucial in getting there.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, on the other hand, are still very much in the title race. Currently sitting top of the Premier League table with a three point gap on Liverpool and a four point gap on Manchester City, Arsenal will need to keep up their form if they are to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal Stats

Spurs’ last game ended in major disappointment. They haven’t played since the 13th April against Newcastle - a game where they were battered 4-0. Goals from Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar meant that they came away with nothing. A shocking defeat that they will want to turn around in this game.

Arsenal in contrast are off the back of two massive wins. Firstly, a 2-0 win against Wolves, but more recently a 5-0 demolition against Chelsea. Goals from Leandro Trossard, Ben White and Kai Havertz saw off their London rivals. Confidence will certainly be high in the Arsenal camp at the minute with that win taking them to top spot. It’s now just about whether or not they can stay there.

The Gunners have a fantastic goal difference record. This having scored more goals than anyone else in the league (82) and having conceded the least as well (26). They are an incredibly difficult team to beat. Especially this year.

Despite this, Tottenham also have a decent scoring record averaging just over two goals per game. Could they be the ones to break down this Arsenal defence?

Historically, Arsenal have the upper hand in this game. And in more recent years that has been the case as well. In the last six meetings between the two teams the Gunners have four wins, only losing once.

Ange Postecoglu’s men may take some joy from that one win having played a major part in Arsenal bottling the title last season. Something they will look to do again in this game.

Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal Players To Watch

For the hosts, it’s hard to look past Heung Min Son as the player to watch. The Tottenham captain has provided 15 goals and nine assists for them this season. That including two goals in the last meeting between the sides back in September. With a decent record against Arsenal as well, Son is sure to make an impact for the hosts in this game.

As for the away side, Leandro Trossard stands out as the man to keep an eye on. Trossard has ten goals to his name this season and in more recent weeks especially he has tended to pop up with a goal. Three goals in his last five league games, Trossard could play a key part in this game.

Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal Team News

Postecoglou looks as though he will continue to be without a number of players in this game. Fraser Forster, Manor Solomon, Pedro Porro, Richarlison and Ryan Sessegnon all look set to miss out.

The Gunners are expected to continue to be without Jurrien Timber. However there is some positive news with him having been seen in training and making an appearance in a game for Arsenal under 21s recently - scoring an unbelievable goal as well.
