Brighton struggle in the Arctic Circle

As many Brighton fans have become used to over the years, we make hard work to break down a low block and it wasn’t any different on Thursday. Despite having 68% possession, 50 touches in Tromsø’s box and 25 shots, the Albion failed to find the back of the net. Ibrahim Osman having the best chance of the game as his volley was brilliantly saved by Jakob Haugaard, who was a doubt heading into the game.

In fact Tromsø are probably the side who are kicking themselves the most. Despite registering five shots all game they had the best opportunities of the game. Isak Vadebu with the best of the lot, perhaps having too much time on his hands as he tried to place his effort into the top right corner but he got it all wrong and skied it high and wide, much to the disappointment of the home crowd.

Tromsø 0-0 Brighton as it Happened

Right from kick off it was clear to see how the game would pan out. Brighton holding the vast majority of possession with Tromsø looking to hit quickly on the counter attack. Early on Brighton were finding large pockets of space in and around the Tromsø midfield. Osman looked the brightest spark for the Seagulls, not just during spells but across the entire game as he kept looking to take on his man. He was brought down in the penalty box early doors but the referee waved it off as VAR agreed with the on-field decision.

Heine Asen Larsen, the man in form for Tromsø having scored eight in his last eight leading up to this game, would find himself barrelling down on goal after being played in behind a very high and slow Brighton backline. Fortunately for the Seagulls Olivier Boscagli recovered well and thwarted the chance without conceding a shot.

Brighton would end the first half just as they started, playing in total dominance. Their best spell around the 30th minute saw a smart save from Haugaard to deny Georginio Rutter from long range as well as an even better one from the resulting corner. The ball bounced kindly for Osman as he struck it beautifully on the volley, forcing Haugaard into a near enough full stretch save to his right.

Tromsø came out firing in the second half and were incredibly unlucky not to take the lead as Brighton were seemingly taken aback by the Norwegian sides energy. Asen Larsen being played in behind again but hesitated for just a tad too long as Verbruggen saved well.

Brighton eventually found their feet and normality resumed with the Albion piling on the pressure in hopes to break the deadlock. Despite all the possession the Seagulls had, they struggled to create anything. Countless hopeless crosses into the box as a very well structed Tromsø defence saw no problem in dealing with.

60 minutes, 70 minutes, 80 minutes went by and yet the deadlock was yet to be broken until Vadebu, yes the CB, was played in on goal and had so much time on his hands, skewed his effort off target. If that was any player from another position that surely would have been 1-0 Tromsø.

Tromsø vs Brighton Man of the Match

Unsurprisingly the man of the match goes to Tromsø’s number one, Jakob Haugaard. Making six saves during the game with the best of the lot was his diving effort to deny Ibrahim Osman. Preventing a total of 1.07 xG, the Dane had a superb game.

Fun Fact about Haugaard, he was the keeper in goal for Wigan the day Brighton secured promotion to the Premier League back in 2017.
