A big Step Towards Glory and Pain

Arsenal took a huge step towards becoming Premier League champions for the first time in over 20 years as they defeated West Ham United 0-1 away at London Stadium in a game full of late drama.

But the Gunners weren't the only team with fate in their hands, as West Ham themselves had everything to play for in their fight against relegation with Tottenham Hotspur.

Mikel Arteta went with his third unchanged XI in a week, following on from last weekend's 3-0 victory over Fulham and 1-0 over Atletico Madrid to reach the UEFA Champions League final.

The Spanish coach's team started the game on the front foot, and were so close to finding an opening goal in the early stages from a corner. As winger Leandro Trossard had tw oheaded chances come his way, the first being well saved by Hammers goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, before the rebounded effort from Trossard hit the crossbar.

Arsenal came close again soon after from another set piece, Riccardo Calafiori managed to nod a Declan Rice free-kick towards goal but his effort was well blocked by former Gunners defener Konstantinos Mavropanos.

However, Arsenal's momentum halted due to an injury to right-back Ben White. The English defender injured his knee in a challenge and had to be substituted, with Arteta interestingly turning towards Martin Zubimendi and Rice moving to right-back. But this decision failed to have the desired impact for Arsenal, with the Gunners struggling for control without Rice in the middle and West Ham nearly capitalized as a result. As striker Taty Castellanos firing a header on target, which was kept out by Raya.

Half-Time: West Ham Utd 0-0 Arsenal

The second half began as the first ended, with upmost tension across the London Stadium. Arsenal regained a sense of control in the contest, but failed to properly create any meaningful chances towards the West Ham goal.

The tension of the game meant that the first real chance at goal during the second half came in the 78th minute, as Hammers midfielder Mateus Fernandes suddenly broke through the Arsenal defence. But as time stood still, goalkeeper David Raya came up with a huge save, standing his ground as Fernandes tried to catch him out at the near post.

That moment instantly felt big, bit it felt even bigger just minutes later.

Martin Odegaard, who had been brought on alongside Kai Havertz and Noni Madueke for Arsenal midway through the half, found himself with the ball in the West Ham box. The Arsenal captain laid the ball off to Trossard who's first time strike found the bottom corner with the help of a slight deflection to spark wild scenes in the away end and by the Arsenal bench.

But the drama was only just beginning...

With four minutes of the six added on at the end of the game played, West Ham had a corner to have one last chance almost to try and salvage a point and take two huge points away from Arsenal. The ball came in, and Raya failed to collect, before it fell to striker Callum Wilson's whose volley smashed over the line despite the efforts of Rice.

It looked like elation for West Ham, Manchester City, Arsenal's rivals and despare for the Gunners. However, Raya was adamant he was fouled and stopped illegally from claiming the cross.

After a VAR check and on-field review by referee Chris Kavangah, the world watched on and held it's breath. And finally, the goal was ruled out as West Ham foward Pablo was ajudged to have fould Raya by pulling his arm across the Arsenal goalkeeper.

The final whistle soon followed, as the Arsenal players collasped to the ground in relief. The win puts them five points clear with two games to go, with Manchester City having three left including a tough away trip to Bournemouth.

The title may not be in Arsenal's hands yet, but they take a big step towards glory with three points in East London today. Whilst West Ham stay in the relegation zone before Spurs host Leeds United on Monday night.

Player Of The Match: Leandro Trossard

The Arsenal matchwinner, and maybe the Arsenal title winner. But Leandro Trossard's performance as more than just that one shot.

Trossard started the game brightly, looking like Arsenal's most dangerous attaker. And was unlucky to not claim an assist for a beautiful trivela pass through to Calafirori in the early stages.

But his moment came on 83 minutes, ad he fired in one of the biggest goals Arsenal have scored in years. And a moment that may be imortaised in time forever if things go Arsenal's way in the next weeks.

Bad Day At The Office: Mateus Fernandes

Hammers midfielder Mateus Fernandes has had a fine season, and actually had a decent game in the middle again vs Arsenal, but his day will be defined by a big error.

Fernandes was presented with the game's biggest chance just twelve minutes from the ninety, but failed to take it with the goal gaping. As Raya was equal to his effort after breaking through the Arsenal defence with a one-two.

If West Ham fail to survive, that miss will be one which many fans and Fernandes himself will struggle to forget.
