What Next for Newport?

The final day across the EFL was one frought with drama and suspense and, after a the relief of an escape at the last breath, Christian Fuchs is going to have a big summer in front of him.

Having guided the Welsh outfit away from the drop zone and back into EFL survival, the 40-year-old Austrian wore a face frought with relief after a season that had been, to quote the man himself, "stressful".

That stress was evident in the final stretches of Newport's last game of the season. They trailed Barrow by one goal with 15 minutes on the clock, and results elsewhere had not been kind to them. As it stood, County were heading into non-league.

They would find a merciful pair of saviours, though, to keep their EFL status intact in the form of goals from Tom Davies and Bobby Kamwa. This kept Newport safe, and left Fuchs immediately looking ahead to a fresh, more optimistic campaign at the lowest level of the EFL.

But will his achievement in the Newport dugout see him attract outside interest?

Fuchs' Next Steps

After Leicester City were relegated from the Championship after a shock pair of seasons, and with Gary Rowett's short-term contract ending to leave a vacant hotseat in the King Power Stadium's dugout, plenty of Foxes fans have attributed Fuchs as a potential candidate to lead the team out of their plight, speaking of their desire to see Fuchs make a return to the East Midlands.

One fan spoke to BBC Sport, stating that the new manager "had" to be "title-winning Fuchs", and compared the potential of a club legend leading the club to the situation of Michael Carrick and Manchester United, with the former Red Devils midfielder guiding United into the Champions League for next season amidst his interim contract.

Christian Fuchs committed himself to what was described as a "long-term contract" back in November, as stated by chairman Huw Jenkins, which was landed at a time when the Exiles sat at the foot of the League Two table.

Any interest from his old haunt would certainly spark an emotional interest from Fuchs. In fact, their win over Barrow came 10 years to the day after Leicester City's immortal Premier League title win, one of the most famous and astounding underdog stories in global sporting history and an irony that was not lost on the Austrian.

"It was meant to be, I guess," said Fuchs, in the middle of passionate Newport celebrations.

"It's a very nice side note as well, absolutely, but I would have been very happy if we could have done it a little bit earlier this season. It is what it is, and we've done it."

There is no concrete evidence just yet to suggest that Leicester could look at a move for Fuchs, with the current betting favourite claimed to be former Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson. If he doesn't somehow end up back at Posh once again, that is.

Fuchs Looks Ahead

If Fuchs is looking into the next step of his managerial career, then you wouldn't be able to tell through reading his intentions. He states that work has already commenced on improving County's 20th-placed finish following a season that was spent almost entirely in and around the trap door.

"That's the goal, right? We've definitely got to review the whole season, not only the period when I was here, but from the very beginning, to see what mistakes have been made, definitely.

Looking back now, the David Hughes era was one of the most miserable periods in Newport County’s recent history.

"But then also, you have those two games that finished the season [that has put the club] in a good place and to push forward.

"We cannot just sit around and see what will happen next season, we need to push forward and need to better the team, need to use that momentum that we just created to push forward."

Newport County Transfer Dealings

No matter what comes to pass in the next season, it will almost certainly be performed with a brand new Newport County team. As many as 17 players are either out of contract this summer, or making their way back to parent clubs after finishing loan deals in Wales.

Keeping key players around, such as Kamwa with his vital late goals in the season and captain Matt Baker, will be a vital touch for Fuchs, as will be the task of keeping around long-term playing staff like Courtney Baker-Richardson and Cameron Evans. The loan market was a useful tool for them too, with the likes of Ben Lloyd, Ryan Delaney, Sven Sprangler and Harrison Biggins all having a part to play.

League Two's longest-serving member remain.
It'll be a 14th-straight season at that level for Newport County in 26-27, a club that's done it all in that time from Play-Off Finals to last day escapes.

When quizzed about Newport's forthcoming recruitment strategy for the 2026/27 season, Fuchs said: "It's immediately [underway] yes. All that has started already but I'm also looking forward now to a few days off my phone. You cannot really turn it off all the time, but I'm actually really looking forward to after a couple of days.

To go through those ups and downs – and too many downs for my taste - then at the end to come out on top has just been incredible.

I like to be in the background and do my job and be humble, but it also felt good, to be honest."

Needless to say, the majority of Newport County fans will be hoping that the club can build on their successful survival last season, and to do so with the popular Christian Fuchs remaining in the dugout.
