Which nation will score the most goals at Euro 2024?

27/06/24 10:43

The group stages have finally been completed. We’ve seen goals, goals and more goals. With that in mind, we’ve suggested the team that we think will finish the tournament as the top scoring team.

Germany

Topping their group, hosts Germany are looking like the best option to pick. They have scored eight goals from three matches, the 5-1 victory over Scotland being the major reason the tally is so high. As they finished on seven points out of a possible nine, they will face a best third place team in the round of 16. This team is Denmark, a tougher match than people expect.

However, Germany has one of the attacks in the world and I believe they will see the Danes off and progress through to the next round. Jamal Musiala and Niclas Füllkrug have both bagged themselves two goals so far with captain İlkay Gündoğan, Kai Havertz, Florian Wirtz and Emre Can all on one goal. They have some of the best goal and assist stats domestically last season, especially Wirtz who ended the season with 18 goals and 20 assists.

SofaScore have given them an average rating of 7.22, the highest of all 24 teams at this year’s Euros. With that form, a route straight to the final is on the cards, giving them plenty more chances to score more goals, solidifying themselves as Euros Top Team Goalscorers.

Portugal

Despite losing their final game against Georgia, Portugal go through to the next round top of Group F on six points from two wins out of three. Record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo is yet to open his Euro 2024 account but I believe that the goals will start coming for him in these knockout rounds. Same as Germany they will face a best third place team for winning their group and that team will be Slovenia, who made it through via goal difference beating Hungary to be the last best third placed team. They have scored five goals, with one own goal included in that total and will probably grab at least two more against Slovenia.

During the Euro 2024 qualifiers, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes was the top assister, registering a total of eight assists. He will look to continue that form as Portugal also have one of the best attacks on paper. He has scoring ability as well, grabbing a goal in their 3-0 win over Turkey, something that will help Portugal push for the Top Scoring Team.

SofaScore has rated Portugal’s average rating as 7.01, fifth highest out of all the teams. No disrespect to Slovenia but in my opinion, they will get breezed past by Portugal, setting up Roberto Martinez’s men for a match between the winner of France vs Belgium. It is up to Portugal to see if they have the willpower to beat a dangerous France side, who I predict to go through into the next round.

Spain

Spain are the only team in this tournament to have kept a clean sheet in every match so far. On top of that they have won all three of their group stage matches scoring five goals in the process. They have looked very convincing to go all the way to the final as they have played excellently and their reward for winning Group B is a round of 16 matchup with Georgia.

All five of their goals have been spread out across five different players, but the one they will rely on most is captain Álvaro Morata. For his club Atletico Madrid, he scored 21 times across all competitions and is the third highest Euros scorer with seven goals from three Euros appearances, including this one. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has been superb as well, averaging 4,01 successful dribbles and 0.57 assists from the two matches he’s played. It is not all about stats though as visually, he has been a joy to watch and is an amazing chance creator even at the age of 16.

Ranked second in terms of average match rating by Sofascore, the 7.16 rated side should beat Georgia by a few goals as when Georgia faced off against Portugal, they fielded a weaker side knowing they had already qualified for the next round. Spain will not make the same mistake as everything is on the line and I predict that Spain will win by at least two goals, pushing their tally up even more.

France

On the final day of Group D, France were actually pipped to the top spot by Austria. Surprisingly, France have the lowest total out of all the teams that we have suggested, but you can never count them out. Having scored two goals, with Maximilian Wöber’s own goal included, France will need to step their game up in these knockout stage games if they want to achieve Team Top Goalscorer.

Global superstar Kylian Mbappé’s middle name might as well be goals. He isn’t the sole reason why the tally is so low but breaking his nose in matchday one hasn’t helped. That then meant he was on the bench for France’s most important game so far. He returned against Poland and was back to his goalscoring ways. His average goals per 90 in Ligue 1 last season was 1.13 and had an average of 2.46 shots on target. Mbappé will be the first name on that France team sheet every game given the quality he possesses, dragging France into the top scoring race single handedly.

SofaScore have given France an average rating of 7.12, third out of all the teams, even with them coming second in their group. That has cost them as they will face Belgium in the round of 16. Although Belgium have been performing awfully this Euros, they still have a good side and will be amped up knowing they are facing last World Cup’s runners up. With Mbappé back in the fray, I expect France to go to the next round, with a tense match versus Belgium, goals should be guaranteed.

Netherlands

The Dutch have shocked a few people with their third place standing in Group D, but they have provided goals in this tournament. They have scored 4 goals from three games, including a 0-0 draw against France, where they had a goal harshly disallowed for goalkeeper obstruction. The Netherlands have been extremely lucky with who they have been drawn up to face in the round of 16, playing Romania. On paper this is a great matchup as The Netherlands are placed seventh in the FIFA rankings and their opponents Romania are 40 places above them in 47th place.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo has been phenomenal for his country yet again, contributing two goals to Holland’s four goals. This Euros he is averaging 1.38 shots on target per 90 minutes and is outperforming his expected goals of 0.53. The team isn’t just Gakpo however. Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst are the other Netherlands scorers and I predict that at least one of those three will score at least once in the rest of their campaign.

SofaScore have ranked their match performance the lowest of the five teams we have suggested at a 6.92, but they look like they will go far into this tournament depending on if they beat Romania. If they do, then it will be a rematch versus Austria, who beat them 2-3, or a tough match against Turkey. Goals will be a necessity for them and I believe that they have that in them, possibly outscoring current leaders Germany along the way.
