Who is Désiré Doué, the player on all the top clubs' radars?

The French wonderkid is reportedly drawing interest from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, PSG and Dortmund. With them all looking to prise him away from current club Rennes, let’s dive into who he is and why he is drawing so much interest.

Just over a week away from his 19th birthday, the 18-year-old was born in Angers, France before going through the Rennes academy and earning promotion to their first team in July 2022.

In August 2022 he made his senior debut for Rennes before later scoring his first senior goal in a match against Brest, becoming the first player born in 2005 to score in any of Europe’s top five leagues.

This season he has made 31 appearances for Rennes, picking up four goals and four assists. Numbers that may not jump out but the raw talent is there, and with improved decision making Doue has the potential to put up fantastic numbers.

Doue operates primarily as a number 10 or on the left-wing. He played as a 10 for France’s European Under-17 Championship winning team in 2022 where he started six of seven games and scored first two goals of the campaign, a penalty and a direct free-kick.

For Rennes he has featured on the left, where his two-footed dribbling style has seen comparisons to another product of their academy: Ousmane Dembele.

He works hard on the press to win the ball back out of possession and shows great control and awareness when on the ball and can use his speed to break into the box to create opportunities.

As a passer there is talent there, though this is an area for improvement for the position he plays. In 2023-24 he completed 576 of 779 pass attempts for a completion rate of 73.9%. It's not bad, and is likely just a reflection of his age, but there is certainly room to develop there.

Overall his style of play has drawn comparisons to Dembele as mentioned, as well as Eduardo Camavinga and Bernado Silva. All players have gone on to do great things in football and so the future looks promising for France’s next wonderkid.

Doue is reportedly valued at €20 million (£17m) however with a current contract that runs until 2026, Rennes could and likely would demand far more than that, especially when the biggest clubs come calling.
