Who is most likely to win Euro 2024 Young Player of the Tournament?

24/06/24 12:22

These young players will be the future of football, looking to become the best in the world soon, so who out of the five candidates we’ve suggested will take the award of UEFA Euro Young Player of the Tournament?

Jamal Musiala

Finding himself in a race for this tournament’s Golden Boot, Jamal Musiala is the bookmaker’s favourite choice to win Young Player of the Tournament. The Bayern Munich man has found his place in every starting eleven for Germany so far, pushing out club teammate Leroy Sané for that spot on the wing. He has been performing excellently despite his preferred position playing through the middle being taken.

He has scored two goals so far and with the way he has been playing, backed up by stats, he looks to get some more goal contributions. In this year’s Euros he is averaging 3.65 successful dribbles, 1.62 chances created, 7.30 touches in the opposition box and 1.22 shots on target all per 90 minutes.

In all competitions last season, he scored 12 and registered eight assists. Musiala is one of the most exciting attacking midfielders in the world at the moment and his ability to find space in tight areas is second to none right now. The ball always looked glued to his feet and when he does release the ball, it often leads to a great chance for his side to find the back of the net.

SofaScore has given him a rating of 7.9, 8 and 7.2 from the three group stages games that Germany has played. If he continues that form, then I don’t see how he doesn’t win that Young Player of the Tournament award.

What are Musiala’s odds to Win the Young Player of the Tournament award?

Jude Bellingham

After one of the best debut seasons at Real Madrid, England’s Jude Bellingham could get his name engraved on this Euros Young Player of the Tournament trophy. Jude is mot likely the second name on Gareth Southgate’s team sheet, only second behind England’s all time goal scorer and captain Harry Kane.

In England’s last two games, per 90 minutes of football he averaged 3.07 successful dribbles, 1.53 tackles won, 8.18 duels won and grabbed himself a goal in his opening game against Serbia. His defensive output from an attacking role is commendable, something that will help him progress to the next level.

He achieved 23 goals and 13 assists for Los Blancos across all competitions last season. Although his main position is to play as a centre attacking midfield, he has been all over the pitch. He gives England strength going forward and is fantastic at tracking back and defending as well. This all round skill gives him a great shot at getting this award.

SofaScore have rated his performances a 7.8 and a 7.2 out of 10 respectively. Bellingham has earned a total of 15 Man of the Match awards playing for Real Madrid and England this season, proving he is a worthy candidate for Young Player of the Tournament.

Lamine Yamal

Spain’s Lamine Yamal has already made history this Euros as he is the youngest ever player to compete at the prestigious competition, at the age of 16 years and 338 days old. He plays at a level and a maturity where you forget just how young he actually is. With the ruling of being 22 or under, he is still eligible to win the award at the next Euros in 2028.

The two games that Spain have played have been against Croatia and Italy, big sides in recent years and Yamal has shined. Per 90 he’s averaged 4,01 successful dribbles, 1.15 successful crosses, 0.28 non-penalty expected goals and 0.57 assists.

Since he was the youngest play to ever play in the tournament, with his assist against Croatia in his first match he has become the youngest player to record an assist at the Euros. Club wise at Spanish giants Barcelona his stats at the end of the campaign were seven goals and 10 assists. Similar to Musiala, he has pushed teammate Ferran Torres out of a starting spot in the team due to his impressive performances.

SofaScore judged his last two match ratings as a 7.5 and a 7.3, an incredible baseline for a 16 year old at his first major tournament. He will possibly be rested against Albania, but he should be set to display similar performances once he’s back in Spain’s starting eleven.

Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz was a vital player for Xabi Alonso last season, and he will continue that into the Euros with Julian Nagelsmann trusting him to be his starting left winger for Germany. Wirtz has just come off the back of the season of his career winning the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal with Bayer Leverkusen in addition to scooping up the Bundesliga 23/24 Player of the Season award. He has the potential to bring home the Young Player of the Tournament for the Euros as well.

He has shown fantastic stats in just three games for Germany as per 90 minutes he has an 80% dribble success rate, an average of 76.75 touches, 56.19 successful passes and 0.46 goals. His goal against Scotland was the one that kicked off the whole tournament and has helped keep Germany unbeaten so far.

Staying unbeaten is something he is familiar with as domestically Bayer Leverkusen went the whole season only losing one game, staying without a lose for a record breaking 51 games. In those games Wirtz contributed 48 appearances, 18 goals and 20 assists. You can count on Florian Wirtz to improve on these numbers for his national side.

SofaScore have rated Wirtz’s at 7.5, 6.9 and 7.4 for Germany’s group stage games. He would be hoping to bounce back after the drop in rating against Hungary, but I don’t doubt that he can in order to win the Young Player of the Tournament award.

Pedri

Pedri is the future of a once dominant Spanish midfield from when they had Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta. He is following in the footsteps of all three playing with his fantastic range of passing and dribbling ability. With the players he plays similar to reach the top three in the Balon D’Or, there is no doubt that Pedri doesn’t have a chance of winning the Young Player of the Tournament.

Its his skill to make things happen out of nowhere that is really shining through from his two games so far. He’s averaged 0.69 assists, 90.6% pass accuracy, 4.15 chances created, 1.38 shots on target and 4.15 recoveries.

During the regular season he scored four goals and got five assists in all competitions despite missing 25 games for Barcelona through three separate injuries. Once he is fully fit, there is rarely someone better in midfield.

SofaScore have rated Pedri’s previous two games at a 7.4 and a 6.7 out of 10. He didn’t perform as well against a strong Italy side, but he will need to improve on that once Spain play the tougher teams as they look to advance into the final. With Pedri winning the award at Euro 2020, if he plays at his best, he has a strong chance of winning the UEFA Euros Young Player of the Tournament again.
