Why Have Aston Villa Re-Signed Jaden Philogene?

Aston Villa have today confirmed the Re-Signing of Jaden Philogene from Hull City.

The winger signs a five-year deal at Villa Park, just ten months after originally departing the Midlands side.

Who is Jaden Philogene?

Philogene, a graduate from Aston Villa’s academy, is a 22-year-old English winger.

He was born in Hammersmith in West London, and signed for Villa’s Academy in 2018 from the Pro:Direct academy. He did spend time on trial with Brentford, before settling at Aston Villa.

He impressed in the youth sides, and attracted attention from top European clubs like Borussia Dortmund who have notable success with developing English talent. He made his professional debut after signing his first pro contract, before heading out on loan to both Stoke and Cardiff.

Philogene has represented England at both u19 and u21 level.

How Much did Jaden Philogene Cost Aston Villa?

Although Philogene signed for Hull City just ten months ago, for a fee of around £5 million, Aston Villa have parted with £13 million in order to bring the Englishman back to Villa Park.

Aston Villa reportedly held a buy-back clause for Philogene, but Ipswich Town also matched Villa’s bid for Philogene. However, due to Villa’s 20% sell on clause for the winger, their £18 million bid ultimately will equate to around a £13 million expenditure.

Jaden Philogene’s Playstyle

Philogene is technically blessed, and his playstyle reflects that. His biggest strengths lie in one-on-one dribbling, he’s got a tendency to take on opposing full-backs to gain space in attacking areas. He demonstrated this last year, where he completed 2.7 dribbles per 90 minutes.

The Englishman loves to cut inside from his flank, whether that’s to link-up with his midfield, or create a goal scoring chance for himself or teammates. Not only that, but his clinicality in the final third means he racks up goals and assists easily.

Villa’s new man earned himself 12 goals and six assists in 31 Championship games last campaign. His goal against Rotherham particularly stood out, and captured headlines across the country. The winger picked up the ball on the right flank, beat his man twice, and looped a rabona into the far corner.

The goal was something that wouldn’t look out of place in Neymar’s catalogue, and demonstrates just how special and unique Aston Villa’s new man is.
