Why it might benefit Chelsea to sell one of their best players
With a big summer coming up at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea FC will soon have to make decisions about a great many players when the summer transfer window opens. One of those is Conor Gallagher. An academy graduate, Gallagher has made 47 appearances for The Blues this season. Scoring a respectable seven goals and providing nine assists across three competitions. With the absence of both Reece James and Ben Chilwell, Gallagher has also stepped up to captain the side on numerous occasions.
So why would Chelsea sell him? His contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025. Meaning if Chelsea don’t cash in this summer and the Englishman doesn’t sign a new deal, he will be available to leave on a free next year.
Chelsea are also believed to have a need to sell players this summer in order to comply with the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) – given their significant spending so far under new ownership. An update from Ben Jacobs back in December said Chelsea would be open to selling at the right price.
Situation with Conor Gallagher remains similar to late last summer. #CFC will sell but only for the right price, in the region of £45-50m. Gallagher is liked and happy to stay, and has been important under Mauricio Pochettino.

Due to Gallagher coming through the Chelsea academy, if sold he would go down as pure profit on the PSR balance sheet.
There has been no recent news of Chelsea offering Gallagher a new deal, with reported interest from Spurs, Newcastle and West Ham.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino was recently questioned on Gallagher’s future. But gave little to nothing away, stating that the midfielder was an important player but he wasn’t involved and it was between the club and player.

Spurs seem the most likely destination if Gallagher was to leave in the upcoming window. Chelsea were reportedly looking for £50m last summer. Spurs reportedly had him valued at £35m and West Ham had a £37m plus add-ons bid rejected.
It seems Chelsea have a choice to make, either pay Gallagher the rumored £150,000 a week he is asking for, or risk losing him to a rival for a much lower fee than he is worth. Keep an eye on this one in the summer, it could get interesting.
