Returning for our first weekend of Premier League action of 2026 this weekend, we had four thrilling matches on display on Saturday.
Some remarkable storylines were filled throughout the day, from Aston Villa temporarily moving up to second place, to Wolverhampton Wanderers finally breaking their duck and winning their first league game of the season, in stunning fashion as well.
From lunchtime until half seven in the evening, there were X goals scored across these games, and Football Park is here to guide you through the best bits of football from Saturday’s games.
League action kicked off at half past 12 at Villa Park as Unai Emery’s in-form Villans looked to bounce back from a staggering 4-1 defeat to Arsenal which saw their 11-game winning streak come to an abrupt end at the Emirates on the penultimate day of last year.
They welcomed a Nottingham Forest outfit who were looking for just their sixth win of the season and extend the gap between themselves and the relegation zone.
The storyline out of this game, however, was the Birmingham-based side earning their 11th straight home victory. The visitors almost made it out of the first half unscathed, in a period which was just straight Villa pressure, with the hosts having over 70% of the ball.

Ollie Watkins eventually put the hosts in front just before the break, making it his fourth goal in three appearances as he continues his revival into the starting lineup. John McGinn added a second just after the interval to put the hosts in full control before they had to deal with a quarter-of-an-hour period where Forest grew into the game, getting a goal back on the hour mark through talisman Morgan Gibbs-White.
It wasn’t to be for Sean Dyche’s side, however, as McGinn’s second 20 minutes from time sealed an important three points to push Emery’s side into second place.

One of the two 3pm kickoffs saw an out of form Brighton who were looking for their first win since November, host relegation-threatened Burnley, who were looking to end a winless run of their own which stretches back to October.
The Seagulls hadn’t been performing badly necessarily in recent weeks, with Fabian Hurzeler’s side keeping games close, they just couldn’t quite get any results over the line. Whereas, with Scott Parker’s Burnley side had earned two good draws but were rather out of their depth in many of their eight defeats since October.
The south coast side were dominant from the outset, controlling the game outright for the first half of the opening 45 minutes, but they were unable to find a go-ahead goal. Shortly after Burnley seemed to have got a foothold in the game, Georginio Rutter’s low driven effort gave the hosts a well-deserved lead.
Burnley were then caught completely off the pace as the second half got underway, as ex-Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu was caught in possession after playing a poor pass. Yasin Ayari gladly swooped in to smash the hosts into a comfortable, and unassailable lead as the Clarets remain six points off safety.
Brighton 2-0 Burnley - Rutter (29’), Ayari (47’)
The other 3pm kickoff is the one you really had to keep an eye on. Rob Edwards' tenure has finally struck gold for Wolves, as they picked up their first win of their campaign at the 20th time of asking as West Ham’s woes under Nuno Espírito Santo continued.
The Hammers have now gone nine games without a win, and they were never really in the game, failing to hit any of their six efforts on goal on target. Wolves, meanwhile, were very efficient with their productivity, having eight of their 11 shots finding the target, keeping the East London sides’ defence very busy throughout.
Wolves' long wait for a first league win this season is finally over 💪

Jhon Arias got the home side off to a dream start, as he gave his side the lead inside just four minutes as he earned his first goal for the club. A Soungoutou Magassa mistake on the half hour mark gave the hosts the perfect opportunity to double their lead, when the young Frenchman caught Mateus Mane inside the 18-yard box.
Hwang Hee-Chan stepped up and converted from the spot, before the 18-year-old Mane then found a goal himself, powerfully striking Wolves into a three-goal lead and giving Mane his first senior goal of his career.
The match leaves West Ham in the same position as at the start of the day, while Wolves have now doubled their tally and are well on their way to avoid Derby County’s very unwanted record.
Wolves 3-0 West Ham - Arias (4’), Hee-Chan (31’ pen), Mane (41’)
The final match Saturday had in store came at 5:30 when league leaders Arsenal headed down to the south coast to take on Bournemouth who could be playing with Antoine Semenyo for the final time as he looks increasingly likely to be heading to Manchester City in this January transfer window.
The visitors went to the Vitality confident they could continue their good run of form as they start to believe that this could finally be the season they lift their first league title for over two decades.
It was an awful start for the Gunners, who went a goal down early inside 10 minutes through a massive defensive error after Gabriel carelessly passed the ball straight to Evanilson who calmly slotted the ball passed David Raya.
Should this have been cancelled because there was a foul on Bournemouth player before the goal? https://t.co/EUEcZXmPHS

Their lead didn't last too long, however, as Gabriel quickly made amends to level the scores on the 16th minute. Some fans believe this was controversially given, however, thinking there was a foul on a Bournemouth player in the lead up.
After the break, Declan Rice continued his fantastic return for Mikel Arteta's side this season, adding a brace in the second period to put the visitors in cruise control with 20 minutes left on the clock.
Eli Junior Kroupi did give the Cherries an outside chance as he halved the deficit in the 76th minute; an instant impact from the hosts' bench, who made three substitutions just two minutes prior including Kroupi.
The Gunners managed to see off the rest of the time remaining and confirmed a vital three points to extend their lead at the top of the table to six points, although City could cut the gap back to four if they beat Chelsea on Sunday.
Bournemouth 2-3 Arsenal - Evanilson (10'), Kroupi (76'); Gabriel (16'), Rice (54', 71')
