Arthur Okonkwo Drops England Allegiance to Represent Nigeria
FIFA has officially approved the international allegiance switch of Arthur Okonkwo, meaning the Wrexham goalkeeper is free to represent Nigeria at a senior level instead of his country-of-birth, England.
Born in London to Nigerian parents, the now-24-year-old represented England from under-15s to under-18s level. He is now part of a goalkeeping pool that includes regular starter Stanley Nwabali as well as Italian side Udinese's Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho, who plays for Cypriot side Omonia at club level.

Okonkwo was raised in the Arsenal academy and enjoyed loan spells with Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz, before heading on loan to Wrexham in the summer of 2023 in a deal that was made permanent the next summer.
Since then, he has established himself as the Red Dragons' number one, making 119 appearances and taking part in two promotions with the side. This season, he has featured in 42 games in all competitions whilst keeping 10 clean sheets in 37 Championship affairs, enough to place him joint-seventh on the ranking for that stat in England's second tier, with Wrexham angling for a fourth promotion in a row.
Okonkwo Joins Nigeria Reckoning
If Okonkwo is utilised by the Super Eagles, it would form a re-unification with former Arsenal academy players Alex Iwobi and Semi Ajayi. Nigeria finished third in the Africa Cup of Nations last winter following a semi-final defeat to hosts and (sort of) eventual winners Morocco.

They also failed to qualify for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer after being defeated by DR Congo in their continental play-off, with the Leopards eventually confirming their ticket to the Americas this summer.
Nigeria are next in action on the 26th of May in a friendly against India and again on the 3rd of June against Poland. Wrexham, meanwhile, sit seventh in the Championship table after a 5-1 battering at the hands of Southampton on Tuesday.
Arthur's First Day Under Nigeria's Flag Didn't Go to Plan
Suffice to say, Arthur Okonkwo's first day as an official Super Eagle was tarnished on the pitch. The 24-year-old started in goal for Wrexham as they faced Southampton in a huge crunch match with playoff implications, but he and his fellow Red Dragons were soundly beaten in North Wales.

The Saints slipped five goals past Okonkwo, thanks to Kuryu Matsuki, Flynn Downes, Cyle Larin, Ross Stewart and Finn Azaz.
The harsh loss was not a direct reflection of Okonkwo's performance - he recorded four saves during the match. Instead, a leaky Wrexham defence in front of him was more his undoing.
Regardless, his concession of five goals in just one match may have raised a few eyebrows regarding his quality and assumed standing as Nigeria's new number one, and has raised questions about whether he will deliver for the Super Eagles on the big stage.
