Wrexham Finally Get Their First Win of the Season in Millwall Rout

Red Dragons Finally Land Three Points

22nd-placed Wrexham were travelling down to London last night to take on 7th-placed Millwall at The Den, where they were looking to avenge the 2-0 defeat they suffered at the Racecourse in the second half of last season. Phil Parkinson will be hoping Wrexham can finally get a win after picking up just two draws and a loss so far, especially with a tough run of games coming up that will see them take on two of the newly relegated sides, Burnley and West Ham.

In a tight game where both teams were able to mostly cut out each other's attacks, there was some excellent defending from both sides. Wrexham went 1-0 up just before the 30th minute following an own goal from Zak Sturge. But following this, it became a game of attrition, with both sides having some good chances while continuing to defend well.

The game stayed at 1-0 until Moore bagged his second of the season with a shot from outside the box, making it 2-0. Wrexham didn't give up there, though. Smelling blood, they pushed for a third and got it, this time through new signing Jacques Ekomié, making it 3-0.

That remained the scoreline for the rest of the game, meaning Wrexham finally have their first win of the 2026/27 season. They can now use this result to boost their confidence heading into a run of games that would test any side.

The opening five minutes were very even, with neither team able to create any clear-cut chances. Millwall came out with a very high-tempo press, cutting out most of the balls being played through the Wrexham midfield, while Wrexham consistently looked to play down the right flank towards newly signed Issa Kaboré.

In the ninth minute, Wrexham had their first opportunity of the night after winning a free kick just outside the centre circle. Matty James sent the ball towards the far post, where Max Cleworth got his head to it, but could only send it over for a goal kick.

Millwall then had a clear-cut chance when Sykes got on the end of a long ball from Sturge. Finding himself free from the Wrexham defenders, Sykes attempted a half-volley but sent it wide, failing to trouble Patterson.

Wrexham won another free kick when Ekomie charged down the left flank, beating two Millwall players before being brought down from behind by Millwall midfielder De Norre. The foul earned De Norre a yellow card, but the resulting free kick came to nothing as the Millwall defence cleared the danger.

Millwall had another chance in the 20th minute when a long cross-field pass found Sturge out wide. He whipped the ball into the Wrexham box, where Sykes once again found himself free, but he couldn't convert the half-volley, sending it straight into Patterson's hands.

Then, in the 28th minute, Wrexham produced a spell of high-tempo passing that wouldn't have looked out of place in the 2008 Barcelona team, with Kieffer Moore acting as the central point of the attack. He spotted Kaboré making a run down the right and played the ball into his path. Kaboré took a touch before attempting to cross into the box, but sliced the ball, knocking it against Sturge’s legs, sending it looping over the keeper and into the back of the net.

In the 36th minute, Whiteman brought down Coburn on the edge of the area, earning himself a yellow card and giving Millwall a dangerous free kick. Metcalf stepped up to take it and attempted to loop the ball over the wall, but instead sent it over the frame of the goal and out for a goal kick.

De Norre then pulled up just before half-time and went down, prompting the referee to stop the game for an injury break. After the physios came onto the pitch to treat him, it became clear that he would have to be substituted, with Neghli coming on in his place.

As the game entered four minutes of added time, Dykes brought the ball down on his chest before turning and, with the ball still in the air, taking a shot. Like most of the attempts on goal in this game, however, it travelled wide and didn't trouble the goalkeeper.

As the two teams headed into the dressing rooms for half-time, the xG didn't exactly match the scoresheet. The stats read 0.24 - 0.09, while the scoresheet read 0-1 to Wrexham.

Straight out of the gate in the second half, the game looked a lot more open, with both sides taking a more energetic approach in trying to get the next goal. The first five minutes were full of last-ditch tackles and good build-up play, with the highlight being a 1-2 between O’Brien and Moore, which ended with O’Brien free in the box to take a shot... but he skies it.

Just minutes later, Doyle intercepts a ball in the Wrexham half and begins running into the empty space that has been left in the Millwall half, with Windass on one side of him and Moore on the other. He plays it to Windass, who is free on the left, before making a dummy run and leaving Moore free on the edge of the area. Moore picks up the ball, looks up and, like normal, has ice in his veins as he fires it into the bottom corner past the Millwall goalkeeper.

Following this goal, Wrexham smelt blood and didn't let up, consistently nipping at Millwall's heels and trying to get that third. The front three of Moore, Windass and O’Brien were consistently linking up well and playing some nice triangle passes that looked like they had come straight off the training ground. At the other end, that intensity was there too, with the back five shutting down any opportunity that Millwall may have thought they had.

Millwall suffered more injury troubles as a second player went down needing treatment, adding to their woes. It ended with Coburn coming off the pitch to be replaced by Lovelace. Millwall weren't the only team to make substitutions, though, with Wrexham bringing off both Windass and Kaboré to be replaced by Rathbone and Imray.

Just before the 70th minute, Wrexham got another chance when a ball was played to substitute Imray out on the left. He took the ball in his stride before sending a driven cross into the box, which found a free Ekomié. He sent the ball across the keeper and into the side netting, making the game 3-0.

The final 20 minutes were very similar to the rest of the half, with Millwall suffering more injuries while Wrexham dominated possession and just outplayed them, keeping the ball away from Millwall and having over 70% possession in the second half.

Millwall tried, and at times in the first half it looked as though they could have been winning this fixture, but ultimately, Wrexham were just too strong on the day.

Anthony Patterson - Kept a clean sheet and was there when Wrexham needed him. An overall solid performance. - 7/10
