What is the Portuguese Cup format?

Similar to other cup competitions across Europe, the Taca de Portugal is a knockout tournament consisting of multiple rounds leading up to the final, where the champions are crowned.

The Portuguese Cup consists of eight rounds, including the final. The first round sees teams from the third division and below enter before being joined by second-tier teams in round 2, and finally, the top division teams in round 3.

Each game is in a knockout format, meaning a winner must be determined after one match. If the game ends in a draw, extra time is played before a potential penalty shootout to decide the winner. The semi-finals are played over two legs, with both teams playing home and away. This is followed by the final, which is played at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon.

The winners automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

Over the years, there have been 13 different winners of the Portugal Cup. Benfica is the club that has won it the most times, having won it on 26 occasions. Porto has won it 20 times, including in the most recent final in 2024, and Sporting Lisbon has won it 17 times.

Other teams to have won it include: Braga, Boavista, Vitoria de Setubal, Belenenses, Academica, Vitoria de Guimaraes, Leixoes, Beira-Mar, Estrela da Amadora, and Desportivo das Aves.

But who will win the Taca de Portugal this season?
