The European Championship tournament begins with 24 teams split into six groups with four in each group. Each team will play three matches in the group stage with one match against every opponent in their group. The top two performing teams in each group will automatically go through into the Round of 16. The four best performing third placed sides will also make it into the Round of 16, an addition to the tournament made originally for the 2016 European Championship in France. Instead of a draw which you will usually see in the Champions League and other well known knockout tournaments, the fixtures of the tournament have already been decided. These fixtures are set and based on how teams perform in their groups and knockout matches after. For example, the winner of Group A will face the runner up of Group C in the Round of 16. As a result of this, the group stage is crucial to the tournament and who faces who, and therefore it could prove vital in deciding this year’s winner. After the round of 16 each stage will knock out half the sides in the competition, leading to the quarter-finals, then the semi-finals until two teams remain in the final with the chance of lifting the European Championship trophy.
The previous winners Italy should be mentioned as their performance throughout the tournament in 2021 was outstanding. However, the same feeling around Italy has slowly left. Failing to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar and the second World Cup in a row has put more doubts into people’s heads about this Italy side. Their performance at the last Euros may have been a one-off and we don’t expect lightning to strike twice.
Germany as hosts will always be tipped to have a chance. The Germans haven’t won a major trophy since 2014’s World Cup win in Brazil. There is a positive feeling again after 10 years and Nagelsmann has the chance to write himself into German Football history. With a group they are expected to win, they should make it to the quarter finals at least, and with the home advantage and players like Toni Kroos, Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz, they have a great chance at winning the tournament.
England are favoured heavily due to their recent performance in tournaments. Gareth Southgate has managed three so far and his performance at the Euros is his highlight in his time in the job. At Euro 2020, England went all the way to the final to only lose on penalties, while they actually only conceded two goals across the entire tournament. With players like Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Harry Kane, having immense seasons, England look to have a fierce attack this summer, with their defensive depth the only weakness in a gifted squad.
France will always have a good chance at winning silverware. Just 17 months ago they were a kick away from winning the World Cup in Qatar as they lost on penalties to Qatar. They have a massive pool of talent to pick from. Mbappe is obviously the star for them but players like Antoinne Griezmann, Edouardo Camavinga and William Saliba help bolster this squad and give it a great competitive chance in Germany.
