Exactly like the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League will also be changing its group stage format. This is so that more teams can play in the tournament, against different teams in a more exciting fashion.
Usually, each club would be put into a group with three other teams, each playing each other twice in the group stages. The top two teams would then qualify for the knockout stage.
Now, though, it’s completely different.
The clubs in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League will instead play eight different teams, made up of four home matches and four away matches.
During the group stage, clubs will all now enter a 36 team league phase.
The fixtures during this league phase will be decided by a draw involving two teams from each of the four seeded pots.
The top eight teams in the league phase at the end of the eight-game cycle, will directly qualify for the round of 16, while the teams ranked 9th-24th will proceed to a knockout play-off round. Teams ranked lower than 24th, from 25th to 36th, will be completely eliminated from the competition.
From the round of 16, the knockout stage will mostly be the same. Two-legged games all the way to a one-legged final to seal the tournament.
The Europa League, also known as the UEFA Cup before its rebrand in the 2009/10 season, has been absolutely dominated by Spain’s Sevilla. They hold a record seven Europa League titles, first coming in 2006 when they beat Middlesbrough in the final, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2023.
However, the record holders had an absolutely disastrous previous campaign, finishing 14th in La Liga and failing to qualify for any European competitions.
So with them out of the way, please welcome to the stage, Roma.
Roma will play in the Europa League next season after finishing 6th in the Italian top-flight, under the eventual management of Daniele De Rossi.
Now, despite Roma not making the final in 2023, Atalanta (the competition's most recent winners) will now be fast-tracked to the Champions League, whilst Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga and subsequently, will also participate in the Champions League. Now is Roma’s chance to score.
They’ve been banging on the door of winning the tournament for a while now. Losing in the semi-final in 2024, the final in 2023 and the semi-final again in 2021. Under a strong run of momentum, 2025 could be their year.
