The Italian second division is made up of 20 teams, with the top two sides of the division being automatically promoted to the Serie A. However, there is a third promotion spot up for grabs.
If the 3rd place team is 14 points clear of 4th place by the end of the season, then they also get automatically promoted. However if not, the teams from 3rd to 8th get put into a playoff tournament. Initially, teams from 5th to 8th compete in single-legged ties, before a semi-finals against 3rd and 4th, followed by a final for the 3rd promotion spot.
When it comes to relegation though, the Italian second tier relegated four teams to Serie C every season. Two are automatically relegated as the bottom two table finishes, whilst 16th-18th battle it out in the relegation play-off.
