Russell Martin’s Southampton look to finally pick up their first win of the English Premier League season on Monday 30th September 2024 as they travel to take on south coast rivals AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
This match is bound to be an interesting battle with both sides in desperate need of three points. Southampton looking to escape the relegation zone and Bournemouth attempting to break into the top ten of the table even this early on into the campaign.
Adding to this game is the element of rivalry with both sides battling to be one of the biggest teams on the south coast of England. It is sure to be an intriguing matchup.
AFC Bournemouth Predicted Lineup - Kepa Arrizabalaga; Milos Kerksez, Marcos Senesi, Illia Zabarnyi, Adam Smith; Ryan Christie, Lewis Cook; Marcus Tavernier, Justin Kluivert, Antoine Semenyo; Enes Unal
Currently Bournemouth sit 13th in the table on five points. This is just two points away from the top ten of the table. However they are currently disadvantaged by their minus three goal difference having scored five goals and conceded eight.
The Cherries haven’t picked up a victory in the league since their amazing 3-2 comeback victory over Everton. However since then they have faced tough games against Chelsea and Liverpool. This is a much better and easier way to get back on track coming up against a Southampton side who haven’t won a game yet this season.
Southampton Predicted Lineup - Aaron Ramsdale; Charlie Taylor, Jan Bednarek, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Yukinari Sugawara; Flynn Downes, Adam Lallana; Ryan Fraser, Mateus Fernandes, Tyler Dibling; Cameron Archer
Life back in the Premier League hasn’t been the best for Southampton. They currently sit 18th in the table having picked up just one point in five games.
A disappointing result in their last fixture saw them only take a point from Ipswich despite leading for the majority of the game. However they certainly have shown positive signs of change recently. Could this be the game where they turn things around.
Youngster Tyler Dibling in particular has looked very impressive since making his first appearance for the club against Manchester United. He has an exciting presence about him as emphasised by his first goal against Ipswich. He could be someone that makes an impact in this game.
This match is set to be the 35th competitive meeting between Bournemouth and Southampton.
In that time it is the Saints who hold the advantage having won 16 games to Bournemouth’s nine wins. There have also been nine draws.
Bournemouth in fact have only won two of the last eleven games against Southampton. However one of those includes the most recent meeting between the two teams which ended in a 1-0 win for this weekend’s hosts back in April 2023.
Bournemouth haven’t beaten Southampton at home since 2016. Will that change here?
27th April 2023 - Southampton 0-1 AFC Bournemouth - Premier League
19th October 2022 - AFC Bournemouth 0-1 Southampton - Premier League
20th March 2021 - AFC Bournemouth 0-3 Southampton - FA Cup
19th July 2020 - AFC Bournemouth 0-2 Southampton - Premier League
20th September 2019 - Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth - Premier League
This game is sure to be a close run fixture with both teams on poor form in recent weeks.
AFC Bournemouth certainly have an advantage in this match in terms of squad strength. They will be confident they can win. However Southampton have shown positive signs recently including the ability to take it to teams. If they can find the finishing touch they may come away with something here.

(Odds subject to change)
