Austria host Slovenia in their final game of this UEFA Nations League group stage. Austria need to equal or better Norway’s result against Kazakhstan in order to finish in top spot and get promoted to League A.
Austria are in good form, coming off the back of a 2-0 win over Kazakhstan. Their only loss in the competition came against Norway in September. In the return fixture, Austria battered them 5-1 at home with goals from Marko Arnautovic, Philipp Lienhart, Stefan Posch and Michael Gregoritsch.
Slovenia come into this match off the back of a 4-1 hammering by Norway. After an impressive Euro 2024 display in which they remained unbeaten in normal time, Slovenia have had a Nations League campaign to forget. Other than a draw against Austria in the first game, the results of all of the matches have been more or less expected.
Austria Predicted Lineup - Alexander Schlager; Alexander Prass, Philipp Lienhart, Kevin Danso, Stefan Posch; Konrad Laimer, Nicolas Seiwald; Patrick Wimmer, Christoph Baumgartner, Romano Schmid; Michael Gregoritsch
There is a lot of talent in the Austrian national team, but some of their older talents are starting to be replaced in the team by younger players. Marcel Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic are likely to feature in this game, but probably not from the start, as head coach Ralf Rangnick has a settled starting XI.
Patrick Wimmer may only have one goal for the national team, however the 23-year-old winger is certainly a top talent. He signed for Wolfsburg in 2022 and has made 53 appearances for them despite picking up an injury last season that kept him out of the squad for some time.
Slovenia Predicted Lineup - Jan Oblak; Erik Janza, Jaka Bijol, Vanja Drkusic, Zan Karnicnik; Jan Mlakar, Timi Elsnik, Adam Cerin, Petar Stojanovic; Benjamin Sesko, Andraz Sporar
Matjaz Kek doesn’t have the luxury of having a lot of top quality players to choose from. They do have quite a few good players, however most managers would drop quite a few personnel following a 4-1 defeat, something that Kek cannot afford to do.
The main threat for Slovenia is quite obviously Benjamin Sesko. Despite being just 21 years old, the striker has already scored 16 goals for his country, making him the joint fourth all time top scorer, just one goal behind Josip Ilicic.
This match will be just the fifth time the two sides have met in history, as Slovenia have only existed as an independent nation for about 30 years. In that time, they have never beaten Austria and earnt just one draw.
6th Sep 2024 - Slovenia 1-1 Austria - UEFA Nations League
13th Oct 2019 - Slovenia 0-1 Austria - Euro Qualifying
7th Jun 2019 - Austria 1-0 Slovenia - Euro Qualifying
23rd Mar 2018 - Austria 3-0 Slovenia - International Friendly
Austria have to be on top of their game to win this match, despite Slovenia’s poor Nations League campaign. As Norway are likely to beat Kazakhstan, this makes this match a must win for Austria. They have the better side on paper and the more experienced coach, but Slovenia proved in the Euros that they are are tough team to beat.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for Austria to Win + Over 1.5 Goals. Odds of 73/100 on Highbet means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £17.30.
(odds subject to change)
Austria 2-1 Slovenia
While the men’s teams are on an international break, there is still plenty of exciting WSL action taking place this weekend. Aston Villa are taking on Crystal Palace and Leicester City host Manchester United.
