Frankfurt kick off their European campaign this season by hosting Czech side Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League. The 2021/22 champions of this competition have quite a mixed bag in terms of their League Phase opponents, so they’ll want to start quickly with a home victory.
Viktoria Plzen have always been in and around the Europa League without ever being in contention to win the competition. They have reached the Round of 16 on a number of occasions but have always struggled to progress from there.
Frankfurt have the better form of the two sides, having not lost a game since the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season. They have looked strong in all of their matches and are currently fourth in the league.
Viktoria Plzen’s form is all over the place. Their last three matches have included a win, a draw and a loss which has seen them slide down into third. Despite their rocky league form, they managed to dispatch Hearts with relative ease in the Europa League Play-off.
Predicted Lineup: K. Santos, R. Nissen, Tuta, R. Koch, A. Theate, A. Knauff, E. Skhiri, H. Larsson, F. Chaibi, H. Ekitike, O. Marmoush
Frankfurt’s most recent outing was a home victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, in which they kept their first clean sheet of the season. This was a big result for them, as they have struggled to keep the ball out of the back of their net despite dominating against the likes of Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim.
They have a strong team throughout, but one standout player has been Omar Marmoush, who has managed four goals in four league games so far this season. With the likes of him, Hugo Ekitike and Ansgar Knauff in the attack, Frankfurt look like a dangerous opponent.
Predicted Lineup: M. Tvrdon, S. Dweh, S. Markovic, V. Jemelka, J. Kopic, L. Kalvach, L. Cerv, Cadu, M. Vydra, P. Sulc, P. K. Adu
Viktoria Plzen started off the season quite well, but their form has fallen off as of late. Their most recent match was a humiliating 3-0 defeat to fellow title contenders Slavia Praha. They are now five points off both Prague based giants Slavia and Sparta and it looks unlikely, even this early on, that they will manage to catch up.
23-year-old striker Pavel Sulc has been impressive for a couple of seasons now for Viktoria Plzen, so he could end up being an important asset for them in this game, but it could equally end up being too big of a game for him.
The two sides have never met before, despite spending many more recent seasons in the same competitions. As there is no history to go on, it can be difficult to make predictions, however Frankfurt tend to perform well against teams from lesser European nations.
The last time they met Czech opponents was in the 1979/80 UEFA Cup. They beat Zbrojovka Brno in the Quarter Final before going on to win the trophy.
Frankfurt are in form, while Viktoria Plzen are coming to Germany off the back of a humiliating defeat. On top of this, Frankfurt have the better team on paper and play in a more competitive league.
Viktoria Plzen shouldn’t be discounted as they do create opportunities, and Frankfurt don’t exactly have the best defensive record, however it is unlikely that they’ll manage to get a win here.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for Frankfurt to Win and BTTS. Odds of 15/8 on Parimatch means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £28.75.
(odds subject to change)
Frankfurt 3-1 Viktoria Plzen
The game will be relatively comfortable for Frankfurt, but that doesn’t mean that Viktoria Plzen won’t have chances to score. In the end, the German side’s quality will shine through and give them the win.
