Rangers travel to Greece to face Olympiacos in the Europa League this week, one of the greatest distances between two clubs in this competition. Both sides are eyeing automatic qualification into the knockout rounds so there is quite a lot on the line here.
Olympiacos’ domestic league season has started quite poorly, as they are fourth after 10 league games. They are only three points of the league leaders, however Olympiacos never usually struggle in the Greek top tier. They are 12th in the Europa League having beaten Malmo and Braga. They lost on the opening matchday to Lyon thanks to goals from Rayan Cherki and Said Benrahma.
Rangers have also lost to Lyon in this campaign, although their result was more embarrassing and it was at home. In the Scottish Premiership, they are already far behind league leaders Celtic and second place Aberdeen.
Olympiacos Predicted Lineup - Konstantinos Tzolakis; Apostolos Apostolopoulos, David Carmo, Panagiotis Retsos, Costinha; Christos Mouzakitis, Santiago Hezze; Gelson Martins, Chiquinho, Rodinei; Ayoub El Kaabi
Olympiacos are missing a few players through injury, most notably Willian and Francisco Ortega. The Brazilian winger joined from Fulham in the summer but has only managed six appearances in all competitions, mainly from the bench.
Olympiacos’ main threat going forward will be provided by Ayoub El Kaabi who has nine goals to his name in all competitions this season. The Moroccan scored the only goal in the win against Malmo as well as a brace against Braga.
Rangers Predicted Lineup - Jack Butland; Jefte, Leon Balogun, John Souttar, James Tavernier; Nicolas Raskin, Connor Barron; Nedim Bajrami, Tom Lawrence, Vaclav Cerny; Cyriel Dessers
Rangers don’t have quite as many injury issues as Olympiacos do, but winger Rabbi Matondo who has scored twice in just six appearances, is still missing through a hamstring injury.
Vaclav Cerny will be the man to watch in this game as the Czech winger scored a brace in Rangers’ 4-0 over FCSB last time out in the Europa League. He is only on loan at Rangers for the season, from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
The two clubs have never met before in a competitive fixture. The only previous meeting was a club friendly in 2023 which Olympiacos won 3-1.
26th Jul 2023 - Rangers 1-3 Olympiacos - Club Friendly
The form of both sides in their respective leagues has been quite disappointing for both sets of fans. Olympiacos tend to walk their domestic league without much fuss, while Rangers constantly finish second behind Celtic. In the Europa League, both sides are performing as well as you would expect, so I think that this game will be quite close. Olympiacos score fewer goals than Rangers, but their defensive record is much better.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for Olympiacos to Win. Odds of 19/20 on Quinnbet means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £19.50.
(odds subject to change)
Olympiacos 2-1 Rangers
Both Manchester United and Tottenham are in action in the Europa League this week following their mixed results at the weekend.
