The first round of the UEFA Europa League continues on Thursday 26th September 2024 as historic French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais host Greek side Olympiacos in what is sure to be an interesting match.
Both teams come into this game greatly out of form considering where they should be/where they would have expected to be. As it stands both teams are struggling but will look to turn things around against one another. This setting up this game to be an intriguing fixture.
Olympique Lyonnais Predicted Lineup - Lucas Perri; Nicolás Tagliafico, Duje Ćaleta-Car, Clinton Mata; Abner Vinícius, Corentin Tolisso, Nemanja Matić, Jordan Veretout, Ainsley Maitland-Niles; Alexandre Lacazette, Gift Orban
Much like last season it hasn’t been the best start to the campaign for Lyon. So far they have picked up just four points in five games in Ligue 1. This including a 3-2 defeat in their last match to ten man Marseille.
Not only this but they have struggled scoring goals - failing to score in three of their last five games. It has been a tough start that they will look to turn around here.
If anyone is to help turn that around it will be former Arsenal man Alexandre Lacazette. Lacazette scored 19 times last season and 27 times the season before that. He knows how to put the ball in the net for Lyon. Expect him to impact this side.
Predicted Lineup - Konstantinos Tzolakis, Francisco Ortega, David Carmo, Andreas Ntoi, Rodinei, Dani García, Santiago Hezze, Kristoffer Velde, Chiquinho, Gelson Martins, Ayoub El Kaabi
Similarly to Lyon, recently Olympiacos haven’t been in the best run of form. They have failed to win any of their last two games meaning they currently sit 3rd in the league on ten points. For their standards - especially in the league - this will be seen as very disappointing.
Main man up front Ayoub El Kaabi already has three goals in five games though so will be expected to do well in this game and help the Greek side turn things around.
This is actually set to be the 6th competitive game between these two sides.
As it stands Lyon have four wins in this fixture to Olympiacos’ two wins. This potentially giving Lyon a slight advantage. There have been no draws.
In fact, Lyon have won each of the last three games against Olympiacos. Something they will look to continue here. But will they?
1st November 2005 - Olympiacos 1-4 Olympique Lyonnais - UEFA Champions League
19th October 2005 - Olympique Lyonnais 2-1 Olympiacos - UEFA Champions League
7th November 2000 - Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 Olympiacos - UEFA Champions League
20th September 2000 - Olympiacos 2-1 Olympique Lyonnais - UEFA Champions League
30th November 1963 - Olympiacos 2-1 Olympique Lyonnais - Euro Cup Winners Cup
This is bound to be a close game not just because of the sides struggling at the time being but also because both teams have some very good, experienced players in their teams. There isn’t much that separates the sides.
With both teams struggling to score or make much of an impact in their domestic leagues we wouldn’t expect many goals in this game either.
Our team of professional tipping experts have selected a Draw & Under 2.5 Match Goals in this game at odds of 17/5. These odds mean that £10 has the potential to return up to £44.
(Odds subject to change)
Olympique Lyonnais 1-1 Olympiacos
Don’t expect either side to blow the other away in this game with this match sure to be a cagey affair.
With neither side making an impact on their domestic leagues currently we would imagine this game will end in a close draw.
