Arne Slot’s Liverpool stars put on a 5 star show to secure the Premier League title with 4 weeks of the season to go whilst Ipswich were relegated following a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle after just one season in England’s top tier. Manchester City continued their fine run of form on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa – City’s European rivals who had come off the back of 4 successive wins. Goals from Bernando Silva and Matheus Nunes with the latter coming in second-half additional time secured the win for Pep Guardiola’s side with these goals falling either side of a Marcus Rashford equalizer from the spot. The win moves City up to 4th whilst Villa moves down to 7th – 3 points off 5th place.
Mikel Arteta’s Gunners were held by Crystal Palace on Wednesday night with a 2-2 scoreline. Arsenal made the perfect start with Jakub Kiwior heading in after just 3 minutes before a wonder strike from Eberechi Eze levelled proceedings up. However, a smart move from Leandro Troassard saw him score his 8th of the season to put the Gunners ahead going into the break. For long periods of the second half, it looked like this is how it was going to stay before Jean-Philippe Mateta rifled home hitting the underside of the crossbar from 25 yards out to send the Palace faithful into limbs. The score-line means Arsenal remain 2nd and now unable to win the Premier League whilst Crystal Palace move to 12th.
Chelsea made it two successive wins in Saturday’s early kick-off with a 1-0 win over Everton. The game’s deciding goal came through Nicolas Jackson who scored for the first time since December from the edge of the box. Even with a Toffee resistance and fightback which saw a McNeil volley saved by Sanchez, the scoreline stayed the same giving Chelsea 3 valuable points. The win moved Maresca’s side to 5th whilst Everton sit 15th – safe from relegation.
Saturday’s highest scoring fixture fell at the Amex with Brighton getting back to winning ways with a 3-2 win over West Ham – who remain without a win in 7. The points looked to be heading back to East London following an Irons fightback from a Yasin Ayari opener which had seen Mohammed Kudus slot the ball into the bottom corner and Tomas Soucek head home. But just when the game looked finished, Brighton fought back with Mitoma scoring an 89th minute equalising header from 5 yards out before the Hurzeler’s side took all 3 points at the death following a Baleba 35 yard screamer. The win puts Brighton in 9th whilst West Ham sit 17th.
Newcastle made it 4 wins in 5 with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Ipswich Town – a loss which sees McKenna’s side relegated after just one season in the division. However, it wasn’t until just before half time that the Geordies turned on their goal-scoring flair and following a foul on Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak slotted away the subsquent penalty to send Howe’s side 1-0 to the good at the break. In the second half, Burn and Osula both put the ball away to create a comfortable 3 goal cushion giving Newcastle all 3 points. Newcastle sit 3rd just 5 behind Arsenal whilst Ipswich sit 18th – with relegation confirmed for the Tractor Boys.
Southampton’s misery continued with a 2-1 loss against Fulham meaning the Saints haven’t won in 10 whilst the Cottages made it a first win in 3. Southampton initially took the lead through a brilliant touch off a free kick and for the majority of the game, it looked as if Southampton were going to pick up a win. This was until Emile Smith Rowe came off the bench to score a deflected shot levelling things up. Stoppage time drama then ensued with Ryan Sessegson scoring a diving header to send the Fulham fans into raptures. The win moves Fulham to 8th whilst Southampton remain rooted at the bottom.
Wolves made it 6 wins in a row with a 3-0 over already relegated Leicester City who suffer their 11th game without a win. In a game where Matheus Cunha – attracting attention from other clubs – shined scoring from 6 yards out before punching a superb pass to Strand Larsen who fired from 10 yards out before teeing up Gomes who slotted the ball in to make it 3. Leicester also missed a penalty during the game with soon to be ex-Leicester man Jamie Vardy opting for power rather than placement and hitting the ball too close to Sa. The win puts Wolves into 14th whilst Leicester remain 19th.
Bournemouth and Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw with the home side making it 4 unbeaten whilst the away side look to rebuild following a 1-0 loss to Wolves on the 20th of April. Bournemouth struck first in the affair with Semenyo smashing a right footed shot pass Onana following a backheel assist from Evanilson. Chances followed this but it wasn’t until Evanilson was sent off for a challenge on Mazraoui that the next chapter of the game could start. It looked like the Cherries were going to hold on following a flurry of Red Devil chances, but the home side couldn’t stop Ramus Hojlund from tapping in in the 96th minute to equalise and create more late drama in the Premier League. The draw sees Bournemouth sit 10th whilst Manchester United currently reside in 14th.
Super Sunday’s main event and the final fixture of the weekend took us to Anfield where Liverpool secured a 5-1 win over Tottenham to win the Premier League title. However, it wasn’t all perfect for Liverpool with Dominic Solanke heading in from 6 yards to put the away side in front. Liverpool then responded and responded in numbers. First, a Diaz leveller before a Mac Allister thunderbolt from 20 yards put Liverpool ahead. Then Gakpo got involved in the act taking his shirt off in front of his adoring fans as he cashed in to score a 3rd for Liverpool. Liverpool’s main man then slotted a 4th away in front of the Kop cutting in and launching a left-footed strike into the right corner before taking selfies with fans. To end it all, an own goal from Udogie following an Alexander-Arnold volley across goal. In front of an adoring crowd, Liverpool won. Not just the game, but the title. The win sees Liverpool crowned Premier League champions whilst Tottenham sit 16th in a game that reflected their season accurately.
