How Have Wolves Turned Things Around This Season?
After a woeful start to the 2024/25 Premier League season, Wolverhampton Wanderers seem to have turned their season around in rapid fashion largely thanks to the appointment of new Head Coach Vítor Pereira who in his short stint as Wolves’ gaffer has achieved something not seen at Molineux for over 50 years, winning 5 games in a row in the top flight.
So… how have they turned things around?
Undoubtedly the best and most sought after member of Wolves’ squad, Matheus Cunha has been at the heart of this Wolves turnaround contributing to 9 goals in 14 games since Pereira’s appointment on the 19th of December last year. Many of these goals helped the team to secure vital points against relegation rivals and top half clubs in wins against Leicester City, Manchester United, Bournemouth and Aston Villa.

Cunha has also instilled hope into the hearts of many Wolves fans after staying with the club and signing a new contract after there were talks of his departure in this season's January window. This will have also boosted confidence within the team, as well as helped them come together as a unit to drag themselves to mathematical safety, currently sat on 38 points.
When Wolves appointed Vítor Pereira, they were sat 19th in the Premier League table having won just 2 games in the season so far under ex-manager Gary O’Neil, since his appointment Pereira has massively improved the structure of the team and implemented a solid style which was difficult to identify prior to his appointment. The Wanderers now consistently play comfortable, counter attacking football, using talented wingbacks such as Rayan Ait-Nouri to press high and win the ball back whilst still maintaining solid defensive shape thanks to cover from Wolves’ 3 solid center halves.
The club currently sit 15th in the Premier League having overtaken Tottenham and West Ham and drawn level on points with Manchester United and Everton, making them mathematically safe from the drop and now able to plan for next season whatever that may hold for them.

Towards the end of the O’Neil era, Molineux had become soulless, the team and staff being booed off the pitch and fans losing faith and preparing themselves for the worst. However since the clubs turnaround, fans have regained faith in their club with atmospheres back to their previous booming and fans’ faith fully invested in the project that their new gaffer is building for the club, some having full belief that this could be the start of a new era for Wolves and a chance for them to next season return to the recent glory that they saw under Nuno around the turn of the decade.
Since January, Wolves have consistently played a midfield pairing of Andre and Joao Gomes or occasionally having to play Ait-Nouri out of position due to injuries, both midfielders act as box-to-box players who are key parts of their pressing style of play. Looking at their triumph over Aston Villa in January, the pairing of Andre and Ait-Nouri barely gave Villa’s midfield time to breath when they had the ball, pressing instantly and trying to instigate an attack straight away.
For me, if you are a Wolves fan I’d be expecting big things next season, whilst a european charge may be a slim chance purely due to the competitiveness we’ve seen at the top of the table this season, I don’t expect to see Wolves anywhere near the relegation zone next season, with a first top half finish in 5 years potentially on the cards.
