EFL Club Could Face Unusual Relegation this Weekend

Both the League One and League Two seasons come to a close this weekend.

The fight for promotion is hotting up in both leagues but it is the League Two relegation battle that could end in never before seen circumstances.

Forest Green Rovers have, of course, already been relegated to the National League but the question of who joins them is certainly very interesting.

Sutton United, currently in 23rd, look the favourites to go down as it stands but it still remains possible that Colchester United could face the drop as well.

Colchester host Crewe Alexandra while Sutton travel to Milton Keynes to face MK Dons with Sutton needing a win and Colchester to lose if they are to play League Two football again next season.

However, Sutton could go down in the worst possible way if certain specific results happen.

Both clubs could still finish on the same points, goal difference and goals scored. And with the two sides playing out two 1-1 draws in games against each other, as well, head to heads won’t count either.

In order to separate the two teams, games won will be used to decide who gets relegated and who stays up. This, thanks to EFL rules. Sutton (10 wins) being forced down having won one less game than Colchester (11 wins).

To be fair this scenario, though possible, is very unlikely with Sutton needing a 3-0 or 3-1 win while Colchester lose either 1-0 or 2-0 respectively for it to take place. But then again stranger things have happened in football.

Could this be the cruellest relegation in football history?
