Everything You Need to Know Ahead of Champions League Gameweek 2
Proper football finally returned this past weekend much to the relief of many fans around the world; and Europe’s elite clubs don’t have much longer to prepare for European football as they dive straight back into UEFA Champions League action this week.
The first gameweek saw the English sides go flawless and they will hope to build on their opening outings this time around, but it will not be easy by any means.
There are some barnstorming clashes between some elite sides over the coming days, and we’re to give you the rundown of all the exciting prospects.
Mouth-Watering Entertainment
Since the change to this new Champions League format, the League Phase of the competition has provided us with some juicy ties that many would argue could be a final.
And with 36 clubs all in action over two days this week, there is plenty of action to look forward to.
Manchester Mayhem
Out of the five English clubs participating this season – one less than the last campaign – it is the pair from Manchester who face the stiffest tests this week.
The Citizens are a highly sought-after target at the moment by both Premier League clubs and the media following the guilty verdict over the international break, and after a classy performance over Liverpool on Sunday, it doesn’t get any easier.
The back-to-back reigning Champions of Europe Paris Saint-Germain take the trip over the channel to be next in line to challenge Enzo Maresca’s men on Wednesday.
🚨 Man City v PSG Is A Reminder Of The Path Not Taken
- City and PSG both breached FFP rules back in 2014
- Both avoided charges via settlement agreements that year
- City suspended by UEFA in 2020, later overturned by CAS
- Latest commission found City "significantly in breach" again
- PSG fined further €10m by UEFA in 2022
- Infantino reportedly helped soften both clubs' 2014 sanctions
- Al-Khelaifi now sits atop football's governing establishment
- City remain "insurgents," still fighting their latest verdict— Football Culture (@CultFooty) October 13, 2026
Awaiting punishment off the field, City have admittedly done well to maintain their focus to their on-pitch results, with that Liverpool success proving so. However, PSG are another beast.
The two-time Champions League winners boast an array of elite talent, including Ballon D’Or winner Ousmane Dembele among their ranks alongside other world stars in Desire Doue, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ferran Torres all posing deadly threats in front of goal.
The Parisians haven’t had the most ideal start to their 2026/27 campaign; however, under Luis Enrique, whenever Europe comes calling, they are almost always there to answer.
As for the other side of Manchester, United will be travelling to Madrid on the Tuesday to lock horns with Diego Simeone’s men, who themselves, have had a lightning start to the season; unlike Michael Carrick’s men.
After drawing once and losing twice in their opening five games in all competitions, Atleti come into this game on a hot streak of four consecutive victories, including a 2-1 win in the Madrid derby.
They did get off to a losing start in the Champions League however, as Liverpool came back from behind at Anfield to win 2-1 despite Marcos Llorente’s early goal.
Nonetheless, after getting straight back to work after the international with a 2-1 win over Deportivo Alaves, Atletico will come into the game with a lot of confidence – especially against a United side certainly lacking in that respect.
As for United, it really hasn’t been an ideal start to the campaign following Carrick putting pen to paper to extend his stay in the Old Trafford dugout.
Since losing to Hull City on the opening weekend, the Red Devils just haven’t found their stride. Although they bounced back to defeat Ipswich Town, they threw away what could have been a later winner against Everton after conceding an injury time goal to Ainsley Maitland-Niles, before beating Sabah in their opening Champions League game.
Since then, however, they have gone four games without a win, which included a Manchester derby defeat, and defeat to Brighton in the EFL Cup despite boasting a two-goal lead after just 10 minutes.
Their start to the season has been woeful, and marks United's worst start to a league season in 40 years.

It certainly hasn’t been a strong start for Carrick, and with pressure arising around his job’s future, they will need to start picking up results and picking them quickly.
Can England Continue Their Flawless Run?
As aforementioned, the Manchester clubs definitely have it tougher this week – however, if they are to overcome their respective obstacles, there is a very good chance England can maintain their perfect run in the Champions League, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa facing much easier opposition on paper.
On Tuesday, Mikel Arteta’s men continue their road to redemption after missing out on their first European crown on penalties last season to PSG.
But they are back with a bang. A very strong start to their season, looking like themselves again if we label their defeat Brighton as a bump in the road.
They squeezed past Napoli on matchday one in Naples and will look to follow it up with another win against another potential banana skin opponent in Lille, who are certainly not to be underestimated.
The French outfit are only outdone by Monaco in Ligue 1 on points this season and will be eager to bounce back a thrilling game against Real Betis that saw them narrowly lose 3-2.
🚨 A special reunion awaits in the Champions League tonight as Arsenal face Lille, with Gabriel Magalhães and Olivier Giroud both coming up against their former clubs.
🗣️ Gabriel: “I think it’s going to be a very special day for me. I have a lot of love for LOSC [Lille]. It’s a special day for me to see the fans and to play against Lille, so I’m really happy to see them.”
On facing Giroud: “I never played against him, but I know he was brilliant when he played at Arsenal. It doesn’t matter who I face, I just want to win. I’m happy if he plays. He’s a big striker; we know his career, a lot of things he’s achieved.”

Next up, it’s Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool on one of Wednesday’s early kick-offs. They will make their way to Austria to take on LASK, in a matchup which is expected to be Liverpool’s easiest of their League Phase run.
The Reds have been a tough outfit to gauge so far this season, participating in some wild games already this season.
Most importantly from the Spaniards point of view, is that they put that City performance to the back of minds as quickly as possible so they can focus on turning that loss round immediately and start by flexing their muscles on a weak LASK side.
It is tough to picture LASK in a good light, as they haven’t exactly had the brightest start to their campaign. And although they do sit third in the first division, they did suffer an opening day defeat to AEK Athens in the Champions League, which could already see their hopes of progression fade.
Lastly, Aston Villa are in action during the later kick-offs on Wednesday as they get ready to welcome Turkish giants Fenerbahce to Villa Park in what could be a thrilling encounter.
The Villans have already had quite the rollercoaster of a season thus far, struggling in their opening games against Brighton and Arsenal.
They have picked it up since, however, losing just once in their last seven matches in all competitions.
Unai Emery’s sides always seem to turn it on in Europe, and they made the quarterfinals in their last Champions League appearance before winning the UEFA Europa League just last season.
The midlands side always turn up on European nights, and they will need to be switched on if they are to bring the fight to Fenerbahce considering they are still yet to win at home this season.
In each sides’ last Champions League fixture, Villa defeated Club Brugge on the road 3-2, while Fenerbahce were held to a 1-1 draw to Roma; having also scored 14 goals at home so far inside just four games in all competitions, Villa are lucky they won’t be the visitors.
These European matches provide some serious high-stakes affairs for the English sides as they hope to continue their unbeaten runs.
Some face stiffer tests than ever, but if one thing is for sure, we are in for a very entertaining week of football.
