The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) has divided countless opinions over the years. However, one thing the media giant cannot be criticised for is its streaming ability.
BBC iPlayer, the company’s flagship streaming platform, was launched in 2007, and has been a resounding success - it boasts countless TV shows and series, along with unlimited interviews and news roundups concerning developing situations around the world.
However, what we are really interested in is its ability to stream the beautiful game.
Though BBC iPlayer does not have the rights to stream the Premier League, Champions League, or other European divisions, it does have rights to cover the FA Cup and the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup.
The BBC have agreed a deal with the FA Cup to split coverage between themselves and TNT Sports (formerly BT Sports) for the 2025/26 season. TNT will cover the majority of the games, while BBC will cover two matches per round until the quarter-finals, one semi-final, and of course, the showpiece games at Wembley.
In the case of the World Cup, BBC shares broadcasting rights with fellow free-to-view company ITV. This deal means that the two companies cover the competition equally, meaning that over the course of the tournament, every single game will be shown on both Live TV and BBC iPlayer.
Watching football on BBC iPlayer presents you with an array of choices. Firstly, the games that are being covered on BBC live programmes, such as BBC One and Two, will also be available to stream on iPlayer, and while some platforms suffer from a delay between live and streaming platforms, you can watch the games on iPlayer with little to no gap between the two broadcasts.
All the games shown on iPlayer are also recorded and put up soon after the full-time whistle as a full 90-minute replay. This means that if you miss your team playing live, you can still watch every kick through BBC’s recorded version.
Moreover, BBC iPlayer also creates highlight packages, meaning that if you don’t have the time to watch a whole FA Cup or World Cup fixture, the BBC’s highlights will provide you with every important flashpoint from throughout the game.
Moreover, BBC highlights extend the platform’s reach - they have the right to show highlights of every Premier League game despite not being allowed to stream the full 90 minutes.
Outside of watching actual football matches, iPlayer boasts a wide selection of fascinating and insightful football documentaries, such as “Salah: Never Give Up” and “Wrexham: Hollywood or Bust”.
Alongside these educational productions, BBC also post short reactionary videos and viral clips, taken both from games and from events from around the sport, such as the World Cup draw reaction and interviews with ex-professionals.
The sign-up process for BBC Sport is very straightforward. Here are the steps you need to follow in order to have access to iPlayer's extensive football coverage:
Search “BBC iPlayer” in your search engine, and navigate to the home page.
Click “sign up” in the top left-hand corner, and then select “register”.
Define whether you are over or under 13, then enter your email address and then create a password.
It really is that simple - BBC has made the sign-up process quick and efficient, only adding to the allure of the platform.
iPlayer doesn’t just boast a huge amount of football content - the platform also covers snooker, such as the recent UK Championship, highlights and insight into Ashes cricket, and even makes documentaries branching into the world of tennis (Gods of Tennis) and American football (Tom Brady: The Man in the Arena).
BBC iPlayer really does have it all at the tip of your fingers - if you haven’t signed up already, what do you think you’re doing? Get on there, create an account, and enjoy a rich selection of high-quality sporting insights and live action that keep you close to the action.
It is worth noting that as well as being readily available on the web, BBC iPlayer is also available to download on the app store, making the sign-up process and general ease of access even more efficient.
