Hummels Calls Time On Dortmund

14/06/24 17:24

They say all good things must come to an end. Mats Hummels has finally called time on his spell at Borussia Dortmund, bringing to an end a match made in heaven.

A stalwart at the heart of the Dortmund defence, he has solidified himself as a club legend in every sense of the world.

Along the way there have been several magic moments, and here we delve into the Top 5.

Number 5: The First Title

Hummels had quickly established himself as one of the best centre half’s in Europe.

After scoring 6 goals in 42 games, the combative centre back won the Bundesliga – with Dortmund boasting the best defensive record in the entire division.

Number 4: Against the odds

In his final year, Hummels was a key factor in his team reaching the European Cup final. With his commanding performances defying his age, all roads led to Wembley and a final against Real Madrid.

This wasn’t something that many had envisaged, but the evergreen Hummels put in a series of immense performances and helped guide the team to a final at the same location as the 2013 final.

Much like the final 11 seasons previous to this years – unfortunately Borussia would come up short despite a valiant effort.

Number 3 – Golden Oldie

Despite his age, Hummels could be described as a golden oldie, maturing like a fine wine.

The 7th May 2024 saw Hummels become the oldest German player to score in the knockout stages of the European Cup – no mean feat given the pedigree of the German club in the competition.

A towering header and a typically commanding performance led to Hummels receiving the man of the match award, a true highlight in his time with Borussia.

Number 2: Silverware

Hummels was no stranger to silverware at Dortmund. There will be several pictures adorning the walls of the Westfalenstadion of him lifting trophies aloft.

His goal in the 2012 DFB Pokal final against his future employers was the catalyst for a fantastic win against Bayern. This was a hugely significant moment in the career of Hummels, the first captain to guide Dortmund to a league and cup double, cementing his place in the club’s rich history.

Number 1: Bundesliga Number 1

There is no finer compliment than being inducted into a hall of fame whereby you are voted to be one of just 3 defenders in the best ever Bundesliga 11.

Hummels has consistently shown that in over 500 games in yellow and black, he has been a dependable and commanding force to be reckoned with. He will go down in both his club and nations history, the best, many will argue.

One thing is for certain, there will be a place reserved within the yellow wall for Hummels for eternity. A great, and an all time legend for the Borussia Dortmund faithful.

508 games, but only one Mats Hummels.
